Georgia v Alabama College Football Odds

Written September 23, 2008 by Jack Jones

In what many are calling the game of the week, you get #9 Alabama heading to take on #3 Georgia in a battle of 4-0 teams. What makes this game so important, is a loss here could really go a long way in either teams hopes for spot in the National title. Georgia still has to deal with games against No. 5 LSU, No.4 Florida, and No. 15 Auburn, while Alabama has to worry about just LSU and Auburn. Georgia added two quality wins over South Carolina and Arizona State after handling two lessor opponents to start the season, while Alabama has really came on and surprised everyone, first beating then No. 9 Clemson at Clemson 34-10, then stomping Tulane, Western Kentucky, and last week Arkansas. The odds makers don’t seem so sure on just how good this Alabama team is, and thats likely the reason Georgia comes in as a 7 point favorite over Alabama at BetUS.

Alabama does have two impressive road wins, where there offense has scored 39 and 49 points respectively. They likely won’t put those kind of numbers up against the Bulldogs, but they have to have confidence they can score enough to win this football game. Alabama’s Glen Coffee ran all over the Razorbacks, as he racked up 162 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 10 carries, and the Crimson Tide as a team had 328 yards and 4 scores. With all that running quarterback John Parker Wilson didn’t have to throw that often, as he totaled just 74 yards, but was able to find star freshman receiver Julio Jones on a 25 yard strike in the 1st half. It should be an interesting battle this week, as Georgia’s front has been stellar against the run so far.

The Crimson Tide defense has really played well so far this season giving up just a little over 9 points a game so far. Last week at Arkansas the defense did give up some yardage as the Razorbacks had 217 through the air and 92 on the ground, but the defense made up for it causing 4 turnovers and only allowing 14 points, and one of those scores came late when the game was completely out of reach. The defense will have to step it up again this week when they travel to take on Georgia, as the Bulldogs have no won 11 straight dating back to last season. Bet Alabama +7 at BetUS.

The Bulldogs might have lost their No.1 ranking early this season, but that hasn’t stopped them from continuing to pile on wins. Last week they went to a previously ranked Arizona State team and simply had control from start to finish. The offense was led by quarterback Matthew Stafford who threw for 285 yards and a touchdown, and running back Knowshon Moreno who really looked good rushing for 149 yards and 2 scores on 23 carries. Staffords only touchdown hookup went to the guy he was looking for all day in AJ Green, who wound up catching 8 balls for 159 yards. If the Bulldogs offense is able to continue to put up these kind of numbers it will be hard for any team to keep u with this team.

The reason it will be so hard for teams to stay with the Bulldogs, is that they have an elite defense to back up the play of their offense. After giving up an average of 19 points the first two games against lessor opponents, the Bulldogs “D” has stepped it up allowing an average of just 8.5 points in their last two games at South Carolina and at Arizona State. Though Arizona State was able to throw for 208 yards, they need to drop back 36 times, as they simply had zero running game against the Bulldogs. Georgia held the Sun Devils to just 4 yards on 19 carries. The defense was able to force a fumble and grab 4 sacks, as they put countless amounts of pressure on the quarterback. Its likely Alabama will bring a much tougher task this week, but if this unit is just showing signs of what is to come, than teams better watch out. Bet Georgia -7 at BetUS.

Predicted Score: Alabama 17 Georgia 24
