Georgia at Georgia Tech College Football Betting Lines

Written November 25, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

This year Georgia and Georgia Tech have switched roles heading into their rivalry game. In the last few years it has generally been the Georgia Bulldogs who are highly ranked and Georgia Tech looking for an upset, but this year it is exactly the opposite. Paul Johnson and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have lost only once all year and sit at #7 in the BCS standings. Georgia is a disappointing 6-5 and wants nothing more than to turn the tables on Georgia Tech and get revenge for last year’s win by the Yellow Jackets. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are a very fun team to watch with their option offense seemingly down to a science at this point. Josh Nesbitt is a great signal caller for the option offense that Johnson wants his team to run because Nesbitt is a great runner and makes good decisions on when or when not to pitch the football. Jonathan Dwyer is one of the best tailbacks in the country and is averaging 6.6 yards per carry on the season. Dwyer has done a great job of adapting to the option offense. Georgia Tech also has Anthony Allen as a backup tailback, and Allen is averaging more than 10 yards per carry on 52 carries, so there is obviously no dropoff there. Amazingly the running game at Tech is averaging 314 yards per game! Nesbitt isn’t a very good passer, but quite honestly with this team he hasn’t had to be. Georgia Tech is so good at running the ball with different sets that they very rarely need to throw the ball. The defense of the Yellow Jackets is not terrific, but they have done their job pretty well. They are allowing almost 24 points per game and 347 total yards per game.

The Georgia Bulldogs were expected to slip a little this year, but 6-5 isn’t tolerated well in Athens. Joe Cox has been pretty inconsistent at the quarterback position, throwing 21 touchdowns, but also throwing 14 interceptions on the season. The recent injury to AJ Green makes the deep ball much less likely than it was earlier in the year, and Georgia will really need Green in this game. The running game has been average. The depth is definitely there at running back, with three backs carrying the ball more than 80 times this season. For the most part the offense seems to have improved throughout the year and they are now averaging 27.5 points per game. The defense isn’t up to par for a normal Bulldogs defense, allowing 26.6 points per game.

The college football odds for this weekend show Georgia Tech as a 7.5 point home favorite in this rivalry game. The posted total is set at 60 points. When looking at football picks for the weekend remember that Georgia is 5-0 against the spread in their last 5 meetings at Georgia Tech, but this is a very different team than Tech has had in quite some time.

The obvious key to this game is whether Georgia can stop the running game of Georgia Tech. If Tech has to start throwing often, Georgia has a good chance to win. On the other hand if Georgia Tech controls the ball and wears down the defense, this could be a very long game for the Bulldogs.
