Georgia Bulldogs Football: 2009 Predictions

Written June 12, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009-georgia-bulldogs-previewThe Dawgs lost some big-time talent, but it’s important to remember that all the scholarship players on the roster were members of top 10 signing classes. So that means there’s plenty of talent left in the cupboard on the two-deep depth chart. There is a buzz in Athens saying that the players have something to prove after being labeled underachievers last season. That will help this team become motivated enough to be an SEC championship contender once again in 2009. They meet Florida in Jacksonville on Halloween in a huge game for both teams.  The college football odds makers at BetUS have set the Bulldogs at +5000 odds to win the 2010 NCAA Football Championship.

Offense: New starting QB Joe Cox doesn’t have a big arm, but he’s accurate and knows the offense thoroughly. Don’t expect much change in the play-calling after Matthew Stafford left early to become the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft. Even with Knowshon Moreno gone, the running game won’t change. Dontavius Jackson, Richard Samuel and Carlton Thomas all have some ability. Freshman Washaun Ealey, if eligible, could beat out all of them. Under Mark Richt, the Georgia Bulldogs have rushed for 2,000 to 2,300 yards every season.

Eight offensive linemen return as the strength of this team. All have starting experience at some point over the last two years, not including Kiante Tripp, who moved back to defense. Left tackle Clint Boling is versatile enough to play all positions but center, and he’s developed into a leader on the O-line. Left tackle Trinton Sturdivant is expected to return from an ACL injury, which would move Boling to guard. Even with the loss of Mohamed Massaquoi and a season-ending injury to Kris Durham, there’s still plenty of talent at receiver. The most gifted of the bunch is A.J. Green, who caught 56 balls as a true freshman.

Defense: If the Bulldogs are to be serious contenders, the defense must show improvement. Richt stood behind defensive coordinator Willie Martinez, who was vindicated in a 24-12 win at the Capital One Bowl over Michigan State in a game that saw the defense bail out the offense numerous times on short fields. Defensive tackle Jeff Owens returns after missing last season with a knee injury. He and Geno Atkins give the Bulldogs a pair of solid run-stuffers in the middle. The big question will be at defensive end. Rod Battle missed spring practice. If he’s healthy, he and Demarcus Dobbs should be adequate here.

Linebacker looks to be the strength of the defense. Rennie Curran is among the best in college football despite his short stature. Akeem Dent moved to inside linebacker to replace Dannell Ellerbe, opening up a starting spot for Darryl Gamble, who returned two interceptions for TD’s against LSU last season. Strong safety Reshad Jones had five interceptions last season and returns to lead the secondary. Bryan Evans moved from cornerback to free safety. Prince Miller will start at one corner. Brandon Boykin and Sanders Commings will compete for the other starting corner job.
