Georgia Tech is off to a solid start after winning their first two games, the first against Jacksonville State 41-14 then with an upset victory over Boston College on the road, 19-16 last weekend. Virginia Tech on the other hand hasn’t impressed so far, losing to the surprising East Carolina Pirates in the opener and then only beating an inferior Furman squad 24-7 last week in a game that was closer than it should have been. This team was supposed to be an ACC title contender, but they haven’t looked lit it yet.

The Yellow Jacket offense isn’t exactly explosive as they only gained 235 total yards and 12 first downs against BC. Quarterback Josh Nesbitt was only 6-of-13 for 73 yards and was sacked twice, but he didn’t throw an interception. Nesbitt did more with his feet, rushing 15 times for 50 yards, but most of the offense came from the legs of Jonathan Dwyer, who had 108 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. The problem for the Yellow Jackets were the three fumbles that they lost against the Eagles. So far Nesbitt has only thrown 25 passes, but he has three rushing touchdowns to tie Dwyer for the team lead.

The main reason the Yellow Jackets picked up the win last week was the effort on the defensive end. Georgia Tech only gave up one touchdown and 262 total yards, and against the run they gave up only 120 yards on 41 attempts. The pass defense held the opposition to just 18-for-36 passing and picked off two passes. A fumble recovery and three sacks also helped secure the victory. Through two games the Yellow Jackets are giving up just 260 ypg and 15 ppg with a strong effort against both the run and the pass. The team is also opportunistic in having forced seven turnovers. The Hokie offense has struggled so far this year, and against Furman they only posted three points in the first half. Virginia Tech got things going a little bit in the second half when they scored three touchdowns. Still, if you look at the drives, two of the three touchdowns came on a total of 40 yards of offense, so you can’t give this side of the ball too much credit.

Sean Glennon was supposed to lead the way for the Hokies this year, but after struggling in the first week the team decided not to redshirt Tyrod Taylor after all, and he came in to run for 112 yards on 14 attempts.

The defense almost shut out Furman last week, but a late score kept the zero off of the board. The rush defense only allowed 34 yards on 20 carries, and held Furman to just 4-of-13 third down conversions. In week one the Hokies allowed 27 points to East Carolina, which three touchdowns being scored on the defense on 369 total yards.
