Football Betting Odds: Georgia at Vanderbilt
Written October 14, 2009 by Kyle Hunter
The Georgia Bulldogs travel to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores this weekend. Both teams are coming off two straight losses and both of them badly need this win. The two teams have different problems, but they both have had glaring weaknesses exposed in the first six weeks that must be addressed right away if they are going to be getting very far this season.
Georgia was 3-1 and ranked in the Top 25 when LSU came to town and pulled out a last minute victory. Last week the Bulldogs went to Tennessee and got outplayed badly and lost 45-19. This is a Bulldog team that has shown glimpses of greatness, but plenty of weaknesses as well. Inconsistency has been the name of the game for Georgia thus far this season. Joe Cox and the passing offense have moved the ball pretty well in most games, but they have turned it over far too often. The rushing attack from Georgia has been almost non-existent, as they average less than 100 yards on the ground each game. The defense has looked pretty good at times, but it has also been torched by Arkansas, Tennessee, and South Carolina. The passing defense is a real weakness as they are allowing about 250 yards through the air each game. The Commodores won a bowl game last season, but they will have to turn things around in a hurry to get back to the postseason this year. Vanderbilt’s offense has been absolutely inept so far this season. The rushing attack has been decent with Warren Norman and Zac Stacy sharing the carries, but it is the passing game that has really let this team down in a big way. Freshman Larry Smith is completing just 46% of his passes and has thrown 6 interceptions to just 2 touchdowns. The offense has failed to get to 10 points in three of their six games this season. The defense has been pretty good, but they haven’t gotten the help they need from the offensive side of the ball. The defense has been extremely stingy against the pass, allowing a minuscule 118 yards per game through the air.
Looking at the NCAA football lines for the game, the Bulldogs are 7.5 point road favorites in this SEC matchup. The posted total has been set at 44.5 points. The Bulldogs are 1-4 against the spread in their last 5 road games, but Vanderbilt is 1-5 against the spread in their last 6 home games as well. The road team is 10-4 against the spread in the last 14 matchups between these two schools. Out of the last 30 games Vanderbilt has played, 22 have gone under the posted total.
I would expect to see the defenses look pretty good in this matchup. Georgia will try their best to get a running game going, while Vanderbilt will have to try to mix in some passes with their rushing attack. The trends and the data point to the under being a solid play in this game. Georgia has more talent, but only time will tell if they will be able to overcome a home crowd advantage for the Commodores and get a big road win.
