Georgia vs. Arizona State Predictions
Written September 15, 2008 by Jason Lowry
Saturday Sept. 20th the #3 Georgia Bulldogs stay on the road when they get ready to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils. This game lost a little bit of its luster when the Sun Devils collapsed against UNLV at home. Either way this is still a battle of two good football teams as Georgia comes in at 3-0, after its dramatic win over South Carolina last week.

The Georgia offense had its struggles last week against a very good South Carolina team, as it was only able to throw for 146 yards and pile up just 106 yards on the ground. Quarterback Matt Stafford had one of the biggest runs of his career when he scrambled 30 yards to set up the go ahead touchdown late in the 3rd quarter by Knowshon Moreno. Moreno ran for 79 yards on 20 attempts, and they are going to need even more of him this weekend. Stafford did a good job of spreading the football around, as 10 different players caught a pass, and AJ Green led the way with just 3 catches for 61 yards. The Sun Devils defense is likely not going to give the Bulldogs as much trouble this week.
The Bulldogs defense is likely the only reason they were able to win and hold on to their top ranking, as they forced two huge turnovers in the 4th quarter, as the Gamecocks were inside the Bulldogs 10 and fumbled with about 8 minutes to go, and then intercepted one of Smelley’s passes with just a few seconds remaining in the game. The Bulldogs run defense was lights out, holding the Gamecocks to just 18 yards, and is likely the reason they racked up 271 yards through the air. The Sun Devils have a pretty balanced attack, but if this unit shuts down the run like it did last week, it’s going to be tough for any team to beat them. Bet Georgia -6.5 at JustBet.com
Speaking of that Sun Devils offense, they seemed to have it going as they racked up 20 points in just a little over a half of play, but that was all she wrote for this unit, as they failed to put any more points on the board. Quarterback Rudy Carpenter threw for 242 yards and 2 scores, but did have a interception as well. Carpenter’s most frequent target was Kyle Williams who had just 3 catches, but made the most of them totaling 115 yards. The running game was pretty solid with Dimitri Nance, who ran 20 times for 92 yards. This unit has to play 4 quarters of football, or its going to be a very long day against this tough Bulldog defense.
The Arizona State defense is going to have to do its part this week, or this one will be over, as the Sun Devils are not likely to put up a very big number on offense. The Sun Devils were unable to force any turnover last week in their way to a shocking defeat, as they allowed UNLV to score with just 18 seconds left. Playing at home should help the Sun Devils as, the Bulldogs are forced to travel pretty much across the country. The key will be stopping Moreno and forcing the Bulldogs to beat them through the air.
