Giants 49ers Odds
Written by Jack Jones
The San Francisco 49ers host the New York Giants Sunday in an unlikely match-up in the NFC Championship. Many expected the Green Bay Packers and the New Orleans Saints to be playing in this game, but both the 49ers and Giants pulled off huge upsets last weekend to put themselves in position to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl on February 5th.
This will be a rematch from a 27-20 home victory by the 49ers on November 13th. San Francisco scored two touchdowns in a span of a minute in the fourth quarter to take control of the game. Alex Smith threw for 242 yards with one touchdown and one interception to lead the 49ers to victory. Eli Manning threw for 311 yards and two touchdowns, but he also threw two very costly interceptions.
Oddsmakers in Las Vegas has installed a line of San Francisco -2.5 over New York with a total set of 42 points.
San Francisco
The 49ers capped off an impressive turnaround season in head coach Jim Harbaugh’s first year on the job. He guided San Francisco to a 13-3 record in the regular season which earned them the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye. They definitely put that extra week of preparation to good use as they knocked off the New Orleans Saints in the Divisional Round in dramatic fashion. San Francisco topped New Orleans 36-32 thanks to huge plays in the fourth quarter from Smith.
San Francisco had been winning all season behind a great defense and a solid running game. That’s why it was so amazing to see their passing game carry them to victory last Saturday. The 49ers jumped out to a commanding 17-0 lead in the second quarter before watching the Saints come storming back. New Orleans took their first lead 24-23 with 4:02 to play on a 44-yard touchdown pass from Drew Brees to Darren Sproles.
The lead would change hands three more times. Alex Smith scored on a 28-yard touchdown run with 2:11 to play. Brees would find Jimmy Graham on a 66-yard touchdown pass just two plays later with 1:37 to go. That set the stage for Smith, who led his team on a seven-play 85-yard game-winning drive that ended in a 14-yard touchdown pass to Vernon Davis with 9 seconds remaining. Smith finished with 299 yards and three touchdowns, while Davis hauled in seven receptions for 180 yards and two scores.
It would be tough for the 49ers to win another shootout, so their defense is going to have to be much sharper this weekend if they want to play for a Super Bowl. While San Francisco forced five turnovers, including two on special teams, they still gave up 472 total yards to the Saints. The 49ers finished the regular season ranks No. 4 in total defense (308.2 yards/game), including No. 1 against the run (77.2) and No. 16 against the pass (230.9). Frank Gore carried 13 times for 89 yards against the Saints, and he’ll need to be more of a factor Sunday as well.
New York
The Giants opened the season 6-2 through their first eight games and appeared well on their way to winning the NFC East. However, they would lose their next four games, which put head coach Tom Coughlin squarely on the hot season. New York would rebound by winning three of their final four, including a division-clinching win over the Dallas Cowboys in their season finale. This was one of the hottest teams entering the playoffs, and they remain red hot heading into the NFC Championship.
After dismantling Atlanta 24-2 in the Wild Card Round, the Giants would beat the defending champion Green Bay Packers 37-20 at Lambeau Field in the Divisional Round. New York kept getting big play after big play from quarterback Eli Manning, including a 37-yard hail mary to Hakeem Nicks for a touchdown on the final play of the first half. That gave New York a 20-10 lead at intermission, and they had all of the momentum from there.
Manning had a monster day, throwing for 330 yards and three touchdowns with only one interception. He was the one making all the big plays as Aaron Rodgers was held to just 26 of 46 passing for 264 yards with two touchdowns and one interceptions. Giants’ defenders blanketed Packers’ receivers all game and made nothing easy for Rodgers. Their defense forced four turnovers, including three fumbles as New York looked to knock the ball loose every chance they got. Nicks led all receivers with seven receptions for 165 yards and two scores in the win.
Like they’ve been doing all season, the Giants will have to rely on Manning to carry them Sunday. The Giants ranked dead last (32nd) in the league in rushing during the regular season at just 89.2 yards/game. It’s hard to imagine them having much success on the ground against this top-ranked 49ers run defense. Manning did throw for 311 yards in his first meeting with San Francisco, and Brees threw for 462 yards last week. There are some holes in this San Francisco secondary, but the key will be avoiding turnovers as the 49ers ranked first in turnover differential (+28) this year.
