Giants Jets Spread

In one of the most anticipated games of Week 16, the New York Jets take on the New York Giants in MetLife Stadium Saturday. There has been a lot of trash talk heading into this one. Not surprisingly, most of it has come from Jets’ head coach Rex Ryan. He hasn’t had the chance to face the Giants in his first two years with the Jets, but still claims that his team is the best in New York. The Giants have bragging rights coming in, winners of four straight in this series, including a 35-24 triumph in their most recent meeting in 2007.
Oddsmakers have set a line of Jets -3 over Giants with a total of 45.5 points.
New York Jets
The Jets were expected to compete with the New England Patriots for a division championship. Instead, they are simply fighting for their playoff lives here down the stretch, hoping for a third straight wild card berth. New York (8-6, 6-1 home) currently holds the sixth and final wild card spot in the AFC if the season were to end today. They are tied with the Cincinnati Bengals, but hold a better record of common opponents played. It’s safe to say they desperately need a win this week.
That’s because the Jets are coming off a blowout loss at Philadelphia. New York suffered their worst loss of the season against the Eagles, falling by a final of 45-19. Philly racked up 420 total yards on the Jets, including 102 rushing and three touchdowns from LeSean McCoy. New York was only able to muster 241 yards of offense, and quarterback Mark Sanchez suffered a pinch nerve after a hit by Jason Babin, who had three sacks in the game. Sanchez finished 15 of 26 for 150 yards with two touchdowns and two picks.
New York must shake off that sloppy performance and try to get better on both sides of the ball during this short week. The Jets rank 26th in the league in total offense (306.0 yards/game) and 7th in total defense (318.0 yards/game). Sanchez is completing 56.9 percent of his passes for 3,009 yards with 23 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Shonn Greene is well on his way to a 1,000-yard year, rushing for 941 yards and six scores through their first 14 games. Dustin Keller leads all receivers with 50 grabs for 693 yards and four touchdowns. Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress each have eight touchdowns on the year.
New York Giants
The Giants are in the midst of yet another second-half collapse under head coach Tom Coughlin. New York (7-7, 3-4 home) opened the season 6-2, but they have lost five of six since. Their only win in the second half came at a good time, though, as they beat the Dallas Cowboys 37-34 on the road. They trailed Dallas by 12 points with just over five minutes to go and found a way to win, keeping themselves alive in the division race. New York would be eliminated from the playoffs with a loss and a Dallas win over Philadelphia this week.
New York is in this precarious position because they suffered a huge letdown last week, losing at home to the Washington Redskins 23-10. A week after Eli Manning was the savior against the Cowboys, he came back as the goat. Manning went just 23 of 40 passing for 257 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions. The Redskins took the crowd out of the game early by jumping out to a 17-0 lead, and they were never threatened. The Giants didn’t reach the end zone until a meaningless 3-yard touchdown run by Ahmad Bradshaw with 33 seconds remaining.
Because of several injuries to key players, the Giants rank just 27th in the league in total defense (385.1 yards/game). The one bright spot on their defense has been second-year DE Jason Pierre-Paul, who is fourth in the NFL in sacks (13.5). The offense has had to shoulder much of the load as they rank 8th in total yards (385.1/game). Manning has had a big year, completing 61.6 percent of his passes for 4,362 yards with 25 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. What has also hurt the Giants is a lack of a running game as they rank just 30th in rushing (86.1 yards/game), making what Manning has done even more impressive.
Betting Trends
The Giants are 35-15 ATS in their last 46 road games, including 9-2-1 ATS in their last 12 games as a road underdog of 0.5-3.0.
The Jets are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a loss, and 0-3-1 ATS in their last 4 meetings with the Giants.
