It seems like the Giants just can’t be stopped when they hit the road lately, winning all 11 games they played when traveling in 2007. If the Rams don’t play any better than they did last week against the Eagles, New York shouldn’t have any problems continuing their recent winning ways.
This is season is supposed to be a promising one for the Giants, as the team returns almost the same team that stormed through the NFL on their way to hoisting the Lambardi Trophy last year. Eli Manning and company got off to a good start last Thursday when they picked up a 16-7 win at home against their NFC East rivals, the Washington Redskins.
Even though the game wasn’t pretty, wins are tough enough to come by that the Giants will take them however they can get them. New York held the Redskins to just 209 yards and a single touchdown, while the Giants were able to rack up 354 total yards.
Manning had only 216 yards passing and he threw an interception, but his offensive line didn’t give him much time to find his receivers. Manning did add a rushing touchdown to help the team make it to a 15-4 record over his last 19 starts. Plaxico Burress was the top pass catches with 133 yards on 10 receptions, but Amani Toomer and Steve Smith only had two grabs a piece.
The receiving corps has to be licking their chops for a chance at the Rams this week. Against Philadelphia St. Louis gave up 361 yards and three touchdowns, continuing their poor play that started a year ago when the team was near the bottom of the league in passing. Expect Manning to test the secondary early and often.
New York was able to work the clock last week by using running back Brandon Jacobs effectively. He ran for 116 yards, which was the sixth 100-yard game of his career (the Giants are 5-1 when he hits the century mark). The Rams are a little better at stopping the run than they are the pass, so look for New York to rely more on Manning than Jacobs in this matchup. If last week was any indication, this is going to be another long year for St. Louis fans. The Rams went to Philadelphia last week and were embarrassed, 38-3. It didn’t seem like anything went right, even Steven Jackson, who was held to just 40 yards rushing on 14 carries. Marc Bulger didn’t seem like himself either, throwing for only 158 yards on 14-of-26 passing. Then again, when your offense is outgained 522-166 and doesn’t convert a single third down there really aren’t a lot of bright spots to be found.
Some of the problems have to come from the team trying to wrap their heads around the new scheme coordinator Al Saunders is trying to implement. Once Bulger comes around, he should put up some hefty numbers since he has a talented running back in Jackson and some speedy receivers to find downfield. Tory Holt though needs to produce more than the one catch for nine yards he had against the Eagles. Tight end Randy McMichael led the St. Louis receivers with five catches with five and 77 yards in the opener. The bad news is that the team’s no. 2 receiver, Drew Bennett, hurt his foot last week and is expected to be out for a long stretch of time. This week the team went out and signed veteran Eddie Kennison to fill in.
Passing against the Giants defense should be pretty tough, as they were in the face of Redskins’ quarterback Jason Campbell all night last Thursday. Justin Tuck led the way, recording the team’s only sack but bringing the heat all night in his first start at end. Washington could only muster 125 passing yards against the Giant defense. Aaron Ross and Corey Webster are a pair of young, talented cornerbacks who will try to contain Holt.
If the Rams want to win this game, then Steven Jackson is going to have to get going. He has ran for more than 1,000 yards in each of the last three seasons, but a long preseason holdout might have him feeling a bit rusty.
