New York Giants at New Orleans Saints NFL Odds
Written October 16, 2009 by Rock Henderson
There are five teams left unbeaten in the NFL and that number will be reduced by one when the New York Giants and New Orleans Saints square off in the Superdome. The much anticipated match-up should provide fireworks on both the offensive and defensive end. Giant QB Eli Manning sat out the second half of New York’s blowout win over Oakland last Sunday in preparation for this game. New Orleans has had a full two weeks to prepare for one of the top teams in the league. Drew Brees has not thrown a touchdown pass in his last two outings after going crazy in his first two games. The Saints will look to keep marchin’ as they are 3 point favorites at home, as reported by our latest NFL odds.
New York’s philosophy is pretty simple on the field. Run the ball down the defenses’ throat and utilize the play action game to hit big plays through the air. Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw have been one of the best thunder/lightning combinations in the league. The two have combined for over 700 yards and three scores. Eli Manning has benefited from the development of young wide receivers Steve Smith and Mario Manningham. Smith has snagged 37 balls for almost 500 yards and four scores for the third year player out of USC. Manningham is average over 17 yards per catch and has become the Giants big play threat. New York’s defense has picked up where it left off in 2007 with the return of DE Osi Umenyiora. The veteran has totaled three sacks and caused havoc with front line mate Justin Tuck. Tom Coughlin’s defense will need to contain New Orleans balanced offense and not just focus on stopping the air attack. The Saints have finally put an entire team together as the defense has performed just as well as the offense in 2009. Drew Brees has been spectacular through four games as the gunslinger from Texas has thrown for over nine touchdowns against just two interceptions. After throwing those nine touchdown passes in the first two games, Brees was shutout against the Jets and Bills. New Orleans didn’t miss a beat, outscoring the two teams 51-17 as RB Pierre Thomas picked up the slack. Thomas has gained 212 yards and scored three times in just two games played. The thing that makes the Saints passing game so hard to stop is the fact that they have four legitimate weapons to throw to in Marques Colston, Jeremy Shockey, Devery Henderson and running back Reggie Bush who mainly acts as a receiver. New Orleans has picked up their play on the defensive side of the ball and is forcing turnovers to give their offense a short field to work with. The secondary has 10 interceptions as a team. Five alone have come from SS Darren Sharper as he has taken two back for scores.
This game is so evenly matched that it will most likely come down to who can turn turnovers into points. The Giants have the more complete team, but New Orleans plays like world beaters at home in that dome. I believe that New York’s running game will control the clock and keep the Saint offense off the field. Eli has become quite comfortable with his core of receivers and the added boost of playing in his father’s old digs should only help here. Play: New York +3
