Giants at Broncos NFL Betting Lines & Picks
Written November 26, 2009 by Rock Henderson
Two teams fighting for their playoff lives will go head-to-head when the New York Giants travel to the Mile High City and clash with the Denver Broncos. The G-men notched their sixth win of the season last week against the Atlanta Falcons as their bye week proved to be beneficial. Denver has lost four straight after opening the season 6-0 and now trail the Chargers by a game in the AFC West. This is a primetime match-up on Thanksgiving night so expect this to be a competitive and hard hitting game between two of the most physical teams in the NFL. The Giants are a 6.5 point favorite with a total set at 42 according to the latest NFL lines.
Disregard the fact that New York blew a 14 point 4th quarter lead against the Falcons and had to make a field goal in OT to secure the win, the Giants needed to get back to their winning ways. QB Eli Manning tossed three touchdown passes in the win that gave him 18 on the year. He has a 2:1 touchdown to interception ratio, but the nine interceptions are a bit too much for a ball control team. RB Brandon Jacobs was injured late in the third quarter and his status for this week’s game is uncertain. Jacobs is another talented player that joins a long line of injuries the Giants have suffered in key positions. Third year WR Steve Smith has emerged as Manning’s top target in the passing game. The former USC Trojan has caught 65 balls for almost 800 yards and five touchdowns. Rookie WR Hakeem Nicks looks like he will be a dominant player in a couple years and Mario Manningham is exceptional at gaining yards after the catch. TE Kevin Boss caught two touchdown passes last week and is a nice redzone target for the Giants. The biggest concern for New York going forward has to be the play of their usually stout defense. CB Aaron Ross returned to the starting line-up after a long layoff from injury, but team leader Antonio Pierce has been sidelined lately due to a neck injury. Momentum in the NFL can change in an instant, just ask Josh McDaniels and his Denver Broncos. McDaniels was flagged as the next great head coach after a shocking 6-0 start for Denver team that wasn’t expected to be a factor this season. QB Kyle Orton has been outstanding during their six game winning streak, but two losses in a row and an injury against Washington derailed the Orton Express. Chris Simms came into the game against Washington in the second half and could not move the ball directing the Bronco’s offense. It didn’t matter who was behind center versus San Diego as Denver only managed three points in a 32-3 beat down for the division lead. The Broncos were getting by with a lackluster offense at the beginning of the year due to a defense that was dominating opposing offenses. Denver averages 17 ppg, which ranks 25th in the league currently. WR Brandon Marshall has be the lone bright spot on the offensive end, catching 52 balls for 628 yards and six touchdowns. His numbers could be even larger if Denver had a legitimate second wide receiver. Eddie Royal fills that spot now, but he is a return specialist playing on the opposite side of Marshall. If the Broncos are going to get back on track they have to get back to a balanced attack on offense and have the defense regain the swagger they played with at the beginning of the year.
Both of these teams sit at 6-4 and are at a crossroads in their season. The Giants looked impressive the first three quarters against the Falcons, but continue to struggle closing out games. Denver has completely lost it in my opinion. There is friction within the locker room and would almost be better off playing away from home right now. New York shows why they are one of the best road teams in the NFL. Play: New York Giants -6.5
