Golden Globes Predictions

Well, Ricky Gervais is back which can only mean two things for the Golden Globes this year. One, they are certain to be completely hilarious and inappropriate and two, the viewership for this giant Hollywood night will be huge due to large amounts of people tuning in to see Gervais bash the stars with wild abandon.

So let’s talk about the big players in this years’ Globes.

Best motion picture-comedy or musical is always a big deal and this year it has some big blockbusters, and of course the smaller movies that were released to only certain areas. Bridesmaids was the cheeky, funny movie about a bitchy bridesmaid and her quest to beat out the long-time friend for the role of Maid of Honor. Directed and starred in by funny gal Kristin Wig, this one is surely one that many hope will take the prize. One of the other nominees is My Week With Marilyn with Michelle Williams taking the starring role. This is one of those that many don’t know even existed because it wasn’t in their local theatre. Yet, it’s gotten a lot of buzz and Williams easily transforms herself into the late Monroe. Other nominees in this category are Midnight in Paris (Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams), The Artist and 50/50 (Joseph Gordon Levitt and Seth Rogen).

Odds to win Best Picture – Musical/Comedy (Approx. % Chance to Win)

The Artist: -1000 (91%)
Midnight in Paris: +850 (11%)
My Week With Marilyn: +1000 (10%)
Bridesmaids: +2200 (5%)
50/50: +3000 (3%)

Another major category is Best motion picture-Drama. This one has The Help in the list of nominees which has been heavily covered by media outlets and drove many out to the theatres. Starring the fiery red head, Emma Stone, this is the heartfelt story of a girl trying to expose the awful treatment of maids in the 1960’s. Another big one in this category is Moneyball starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill. This is the intense story of Billy Beane and his unique ways of managing the Oakland A’s. Other nominees in this category include Hugo, The Descendants, War Horse and The Ides of March.

Odds to Win Best Picture – Drama (Approx. % Chance to Win)

The Descendants: -175 (60%)
Hugo: +275 (35%)
War Horse: +500 (20%)
The Help: +1600 (6%)
Moneyball: +2000 (5%)
The Ides of March: +2500 (4%)

Speaking of Jonah Hill, he is also nominated all by himself for Best performance by an actor in a supporting role in a motion picture. Of course, he is nominated for his performance as Peter Brand in Moneyball where he plays a smart and semi-reserved assistant to Billy Beane. In this category is also Albert Brooks for his performance in Drive, Chirstopher Plummer for Beginners, Kenneth Branagh in My Week With Marilyn and Viggo Mortenson in A Dangerous Method.

Then there is the ever-important Best performance by an actor in a motion picture-drama. The nominees are Brad Pitt in Moneyball, George Clooney in The Descendants, Ryan Gosling in The Ides of March, Michael Fassbender in Shame and Leonardo DiCaprio in J. Edgar. This one has a lot of stars up for the award and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.
