Gonzaga vs Florida State Odds

In what is supposed to be one of the most tightly-contested games in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, the 8-seed Gonzaga Bulldogs face the 9-seed Florida Seminoles. This game will take place in Buffalo, NY as part of the West Region, with the winner to face either Syracuse or Vermont. The odds are posted for this game, with Florida State -1.5 over Gonzaga. This is one of the few games where the higher seed is actually the favorite.

Though it was a great season for Gonzaga as they went 26-6 and 12-2 in WCC play to win their conference’s regular season title, it was not a pretty ending. The Bulldogs lost to rival St. Mary’s by a final of 62-81 in the WCC Championship, and that loss cost Gonzaga a better seed in the NCAA Tournament. The loss could work in their favor, though, as it could get them re-focused heading into this first-round showdown against FSU. Gonzaga has played their best basketball following a loss this season, not once suffering back-to-back losses all year. After their previous five losses, the Zags bounced back to win by at least 18 points in all five of their bounce-back games. That’s the sign of a mentally tough team. Gonzaga is led by WCC Player of the Year, Matt Bouldin, who averages 15.8 PPG, 4.6 RPG and 4.1 APG this season. Elias Harris (14.7 PPG), Steven Gray (13.7) and Robert Sacre (10.0) are three other players to watch for in the tournament.

Florida State players went crazy last year when they were announced as an at-large team in the NCAA Tournament during the selection show. But they were much more subdued this time around, knowing that a loss to NC State in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament likely cost them a higher seed, and now even if they win they’ll probably have to face Syracuse in the next round. It was still a very good season for the Seminoles, as they went 22-9 overall and 10-6 in the ACC to finish in third place in their conference. This is a very balanced group, with seven players averaging 6.9 PPG or more this season. They are led by forward Chris Singleton (10.3 PPG, 7.1 RPG) and center Solomon Alabi (11.6 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 2.4 BPG) inside. These two could pose a big problem for the Zags, who lack size and depth in the paint.
