Retief Goosen Odds to Win the Masters

Written April 7, 2009 by Jason Lowry

GoosenThe South African Retief Goosen will be looking to resurrect his career this week at the Masters, as the golfer has really fallen off the map in his last two years. Goosen has just one win on the PGA Tour and the European Tour since 2005, and that came on the European Tour back in early part of 2007. The Masters seem to put Goosen in a comfort zone, as he has really played well at Augusta. While Goosen has not been able to cash in with a green jacket, he does have two major championships under his belt, as he won the US Open in 2001 and 2004.

If there is one major tournament that Goosen has consistently played well at since 2002, it’s here at the Masters, where Goosen has finished no worse than a tie for 17th. In 2005 and 2006 he finished tied for 3rd and in 2007 finished just 2 shots back of Zach Johnson in a tie with Tiger Woods and Rory Sabbatini for 2nd place. Goosen also finished 2nd back in 2002, where he lost by 3 strokes to Woods. Goosen knows Augusta and what it takes to play well on this course, and if his start to the 2009 season is any indication of how this guy is going to play this weekend, you have to think he has a shot at finally winning this event. The start to the 2009 has been a little up and down, with two top 5 finishes, including a win at the Transitions Championship, and 3 finishes outside of the top 25. Goosen has made the cut in all 6 of his starts on the PGA Tour, and the mere fact that his guy won a golf event again, is a good sign he is playing more like the golfer of old. It was the first time he had won on the PGA Tour in three and half years. Goosen’s other strong finish this season came at the AT&T Pebble Peach National Pro-Am where he finished 3rd. Its really good to see this guy playing good golf again, as you had to think he had a few more good years left in the tank. The strong start has Goosen ranked 9th on the money list and 7th in the FedEx Cup Points standings, but the rest of his stats are not all that impressive. Goosen is 138th in total driving, 151st in greens in regulation, and 102nd in putting average. Goosen will need much better play off the tee and in the fairways, but you can pretty much assume he is going to have a pretty good weekend on the greens, as he is one of the best fast greens putters in the game. It won’t be easy for the 40 year old to break back on the scene with a win this weekend, but he has one heck of a track record that says he will be right there when the final round gets underway.
