Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions NFL Odds

Written November 26, 2009 by Black Widow

The Green Bay Packers visit the Lions for the annual Thanksgiving Day game for Detroit. Green Bay would be in the playoffs if the season were to end today with a 6-4 record right now, but they take on a Lions’ team coming off the most thrilling victory of the weekend, a 38-37 victory over Cleveland. The Lions needed used a pass interference call on the Browns to set up the game-winning touchdown from the 1-yard line as Matthew Stafford found Brandon Pettigrew in the back of the end zone as time expired. Green Bay posted a 30-24 win over the 49ers last week, and both teams will have to deal with serious injuries coming off their victories. NFL odds for this contest show the Packers -11.5 over the Lions with a Total Set of 47.5 points.

For the Packers, they will be playing this game without two key defensive players who were lost to injury in their win over the Packers. The Packers rank first in the NFL in Total Defense at 295.8 yards/game given up, but linebacker Aaron Kampman and cornerback Al Harris will each be out of action for this one. As each watched from the sideline, the Packers allowed the 49ers to score 21 second-half points. Though the defense could run into problems this week, the offense shouldn’t miss a beat as Green Bay posted a season-high 484 yards of total offense in their win over the 49ers. Green Bay ranks fourth in the league in total offense at 403.4 total yards/game, and Aaron Rodgers is playing on an MVP level. In last month’s meeting, Rodgers threw for 358 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Packers shut out the Lions 26-0.

Daunte Culpepper starter in the Lions’ 0-26 loss to Green Bay earlier this season, and he might have to make his third start of the year if Matthew Stafford cannot go. Stafford suffered a separated shoulder on the second-to-last play of the game against Cleveland, but stayed in to threw the game-winner to Pettigrew. It’s not looking good for Stafford to be ready in time for Thursday, after he threw for a career-high 422 yards and 5 touchdowns in last week’s stunning victory. Also, WR Calvin Johnson could miss his third game of the season due to hand and knee injuries. Johnson put up 161 receiving yards and a touchdown against the Browns, and he was also held out of the lineup in their earlier meeting with Green Bay as the Lions were shut out. If both Stafford and Johnson cannot go, the Lions’ chances of competing are slim to none this week.
