Green Bay Packers at St. Louis Rams Odds

Written September 25, 2009 by Black Widow

The Green Bay Packers and St. Louis Rams are both coming off devastating losses, but each gets a chance to do something about it when they meet up in Week 3 Sunday. Green Bay lost 24-31 at home to the Cincinnati Bengals after coming from behind to beat the Bears in Week 1. The Rams played great defense in a 7-9 loss at Washington, but their offense simply couldn’t get anything going. NFL betting lines have listed the Packers -6.5 over the Rams on the road with a Total Set of 41 points. You think you know how this one is going to play out? Aaron Rodgers had a monster 2008 season, but the Packers finished just 6-10. Expectations were big for the Packers in ‘09, especially after their offense lit it up in the preseason. But that success has not shown yet through two games, and frankly they are lucky to be 1-1 right now. Greg Jennings was held without a catch last week after snagging the game-winning grab in Week 1. Rodgers was sacked 6 times last week, and he has now been dropped a league-worst 10 times. Ryan Grant has 107 rushing yards on 30 carries this season, and he should have a chance for a big game against a Rams’ defense that has allowed 146.0 rushing yards/game. St. Louis also has only one sack, so keeping Rodgers upright shouldn’t be too big of a concern.

The Rams enter Sunday trying to avoid a franchise-record 13th consecutive loss. Their offense has been even worse than Green Bay’s, as they rank 30th in total offense at 259.5 yards/game. This will be the first home game for St. Louis, so hopefully the turf at the Edward Jones Dome treats them a little more kindly. But the Rams are just 2-14 in all home games since 2007. The last meeting between the Packers and Rams took place here in 2007, with Green Bay coming away with a 33-14 victory. Steven Jackson rushed for 104 yards on 17 carries last week and the Rams will certainly need another big performance from him if they are to avoid making history. Cedric Benson rushed for 141 yards on the Packers last week, and Jackson has a combined 241 rushing yards in his last 2 meetings with Green Bay. Jackson helped the Rams put together 3 drives that lasted at least 10 plays each last week, a sign that this offense is headed in the right direction.
