2009 Green Bay Packers Football Predictions

Written July 20, 2009 by Nick Scarpa

2009-green-bay-packers-predictionsDespite having a 6-10 season in the first year of the Aaron Rodgers era, the Green Bay Packers feel that they are going in the right direction. One year after Brett Favre posted a 14-2 season in 2007, the Pack slid considerably due to a defense that lacked a pass-rush. Understanding that their was a need for change, head coach Mike McCarthy hired a new defensive coordinator in Dom Capers. Capers and McCarthy have installed a 3-4 defense and put a premium on drafting players that would fit that scheme. The Packers feel that they can make the transition to the 3-4 quickly enough to return to the playoffs in 08’.  As of now, the NFL betting odds show the Packers at +175 to win the NFC North.

Aaron Rodgers is a rifled armed young passer that could have a breakout season for the Packers offense. The offense with Rodgers had an explosive element in the passing game that allowed them to rack up 26.2 points per game. Rodgers showed excellent accuracy, touch and mobility, but he needs to improve his decision making. The Packers have an emerging star in WR Greg Jennings and a quality No.2 man in 34-year old Donald Driver. The running game has no stars, but is a solid group with a trio of capable running backs and a couple big blocking fullbacks. The offensive line was spotty last year but has some young talent that should jell together in 08’.

Green Bay will return 10 starters from last season’ 4-3 defense that ranked 22nd in points allowed. The Packers drafted for the 3-4 defensive transition by drafting an impact nose tackle #9 overall in B.J Raji. Raji is a 335 LB. two-gap tackle that has the ability to change games right away. A defensive line that struggled at times last season will also welcome the return of defensive end Cullen Jenkins who should help the pass-rush. Making the transition from defensive end to outside linebacker in the 3-4 is Pro-Bowler Aaron Kampman. Kampman could have a big-time year if he picks up the system quickly. The secondary is very-good with one of the best safety tandems in the NFL in Nick Collins and Atari Bigby.

The Packers will probably be a better team in the second half of the season with the adjustment to the new defense. If Aaron Rodgers can make better decisions, especially late in games, Green Bay be able to make the postseason as a Wildcard.  If you bet on football and think that the Packers have what it takes, you can bet on Green Bay +2000 to win the Super Bowl this year.
