Handicapping Conference Tournaments

scottiereynoldsOne of our expert handicappers, Craig Trapp, has already gone through most of the major conferences in order to get you ready for the conference tournaments and to give his thoughts on who is in and who is out of the Big Dance.  With this article he gives a general overview of handicapping tips he uses to make money off of the conference tourneys.

1.  Take Underdogs on the Money Line

Every year the top seeds for the conference tournaments go into the events with other things on their minds.  This opens the door for the lower ranked teams who have to get off the bubble and grab an at-large bid.  Don’t just bet the underdog against the spread, but also look to take these teams on the money line as well.  You can pick up some huge money line wins and get a lot of value out of these college basketball picks.  Of course don’t just do this blindly, but in situations where you think the team is going to win the game.

2.  Strong Point Guards

One of the things that Craig looks for in the post-season is strong point guard play.  These teams are great for situation one, taking the money line instead of the points.  So many games at the end of the season will come down to the point guard who has to make a big shot or get the ball to the right player.  A nice example of this is Scottie Reynolds, so you can expect Craig to be keeping an eye on the Villanova Wildcats.

3.  Free Throw Shooting

Comparing the free throw shooting percentages of the two teams before placing your wagers can help lead you to big profits in the post-season.  It’s frustrating to lose bets because the team you took missed a key free throw or two at the end of the game.  There are going to be a lot of close games since these teams know each other so well which means games coming down to the final possessions.  If you stay away from teams that shoot under 68% from the line you won’t regret it.
