Padraig Harrington Odds to Win the Masters

Written by

Harrington GolfIf there was one player that took advantage of Tiger Woods missing the 2nd half of the 2008 season, it was Padraig Harrington, who went on to defend his title at the British Open and then backed that up with a win at the PGA Championship to finish off the major season for 2008. Harrington actually has more major wins (3) in the last two years than Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have combined. With all the focus on Tiger coming back from knee surgery, few are talking about Harrington being just two major wins away from completing his own version of the Grand Slam, similar to what Woods did back in 2000-01 when he won the US Open, British Open and PGA Championship in 2000 and then followed it by winning the Masters in 2001. So while all the talk will surround Tiger when the tournament gets underway, it could be Harrington stealing the spotlight if he is able to put another magical weekend of golf together.

Harrinton struggled here at Augusta at the beginning of his career, finishing in the top 10 just once in his first 7 starts, but his play over the last two years shows that maybe he is ready to break through and become yet another one of golfs best to win the green jacket. After finishing tied for 7th in 2007, Harrington tied his best ever finish here at Augusta with a 5th place finish here a year ago. It won’t be easy for Harrington to win this week, as he will face a ton of pressure to back up his play without Tiger in the field, but you can’t argue with that this guy has accomplished over the last couple seasons.

It hasn’t been a very successful start to the 2009 season for Harrington on the PGA Tour, as his best finish is a tie for 11th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. In his 5 starts on the PGA Tour Harrington has missed the cut twice and finished outside the top 20 in the other 3, including his 26th place finish last week at the Shell Houston Open. Its hard to say exactly what you should expect out of Harrington this week at the Masters, as Harrington’s game this season gives us little indication that he is ready for another run at a major victory. Harrington is 167th in total driving, 126th in greens in regulation, and 74th in putting. Bet Harrington +1500 to win Masters.

So it doesn’t look all that good for Harrington this week at the Masters, but don’t be surprised if this guy comes out firing and is right in the thick of things come the final round on Sunday. One thing worth noting about Harrington is his surprising success when paired with Tiger Woods, as he is the only player to be paired with Tiger Woods five or more times and to outscore him.
