Hatton v. Lazcano Odds & Predictions
Written May 19, 2008 by Jack Jones
On Saturday May 24th Manchester Stadium in Manchester, Great Britain will be hosting a duo of solid fights as Ricky Hatton puts his IBO light welterweight title on the line against Juan Lazcano. Hatton will be fighting in front of a home crowd and is the big favorite coming into the fight. The fight is set to air as part of HBO’s boxing special, but if you are looking to catch it live you might have to adjust your schedule, as the fight is set to air around 5PM Est. in the U.S. While we are simply going to preview this fight it is worth mentioning that the undercard will have Paul Malignaggi taking on Lovemore N’dou. Many people believe that Malignaggi will be a likely candidate for Hatton if he is able to pull off the win. Here is a closer look at each fighter and our prediction on who we think will come out on top.
Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton -1100 at Bodoglife.com
There is no question that Hatton is one of the best light welterweight fighters in the business as his overall record coming into this fight is 43-1 with 33KOs. But Hatton is coming off a fresh loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. where he was beat by TKO in the 10th round. While Hatton feels that the ref was impartial and caused him to struggle in the fight, a loss is a loss and he needed a solid opponent to fight and get back to his winning ways. Hatton is calling this a “thank you” fight for his hometown fans, and marks the first time he has fought outside the U.S. since 2005 when he also fought in Manchester. He was able to knockout Kostya Tszyu in the 11th round and is hoping for a repeat outcome this weekend. While Lazcano isn’t a very big name he is ranked 12th in the IBF. The only things that concern us about Hatton is getting back in the ring after suffering his first loss by TKO, and that he might come into the fight a little out of shape. Hatton should win, but will leave it to the gloves to find out who comes out on top.
Juan Lazcano + 600 at Bodoglife.com
Lazcano is a Mexican fighter that from Sacramento, California, and is currently 37-4-1 in his career with 27 knockouts. While his knockouts might suggest that this guy has some real power, almost all of them have come against lower level opponents. Hatton will be the toughest opponent he has ever faced and will need to fight the fight of his life if he wants to pull of the huge upset this weekend. Lazcano’s 3 most recent losses have come by the hands of Vivian Harris, Jose Luis Castillo, and Golden Johnson. All who we feel Hatton would destroy. If Lazcano is able to keep this fight respectable and avoid getting knocked out we feel like it would be a great fight for the guy.
Winner: Hatton -1100 at Bodoglife.com
Hatton is just a bettor all around fighter than Lazcano, who has spent the majority of his career fight no names. Hatton wants this fight so he can get a shot at Malignaggi and his IBF light welterweight title, and also a possible shot at the winner of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Oscar de la Hoya fight.
