Hawaii at Boise State Football Betting Odds & Picks

Written October 15, 2008 by Jason Lowry

It looks like the WAC is at it again this year, as the No. 15 ranked Boise State Broncos (5-0) have a great chance of finishing the season undefeated and making its case for a spot in the BCS picture. Before those talks start getting serious they have to finish out their conference games in the WAC, and this weekend they host the Hawaii Warriors (3-3), who were the surprise team of 2007. Though Hawaii has bounced back with 2 straight conference wins the oddsmakers still see this one being a blowout, as Boise State comes in 25.5 point favorites over Hawaii at Sportsbook.com

Even with their two most recent wins in WAC play, there are few that think the Warriors have any chance of hanging with the Broncos. The Warriors have got some good play out of quarterback Inoke Funaki who threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for another in the Warriors last game against Louisiana Tech. The Warriors also ran the ball well, as a number of players shared the load, and Kealoha Pilares led the way with 54 yards on 9 carries. All 3 of the Warriors touchdowns came from the playmaking ability of their quarterback, and if they want any chance of hanging with Boise State this Friday, someone other than Funaki is going to have to step up there game and make some big plays.

As for the Warriors defense they might have looked good against lessor teams like Louisiana Tech and Weber State this season, but when they have been matched up against better offenses they have crumpled and done nothing to stop the other team. for instance earlier this season Florida put up 56 and Oregon State put up 45, so with a Broncos offense that has had no problem putting points on the board, we think it could be a long night for Warrior fans, but if the defense does step up their game there is hope they can keep it closer than what the oddsmakers are predicting. As for the Broncos they have started off the season just as they hoped to do, and with only 3 home games left including this one, they have to make sure to take care of business on their home turf. So far this season the Boise State offense has been led by the play of quarterback Kellen Moore who is completing over 71% of his passes for 1335 yards and 10 scores this season. Though Ian Johnson splits the carries with Jeremy Avery, Johnson has been the go to guy running for 322 yards and 4 touchdowns on the season. The offense hasn’t been flashy putting up huge numbers this season, but they seem to score when they need to, and let their defense keep them in games.

As for the Broncos defense they continue to play solid football, as their only slip up game at Oregon where they gave up 32 points, but other than that no team has been able to score more than 7 points on this defense. The Broncos defense has looked equally good against both the pass and the run this season, and with Hawaii really not doing either one of those things with much success, we expect the defense to put up another great performance and if the offense gets rolling this one could be well out of reach by halftime.
