2011 Heisman Trophy Odds

Written by

While we are still a few months away from the 2011 college football season, oddsmakers have already posted odds on who will win the 2011 Heisman Trophy. Here is a look at the five favorites to win the award, plus a complete list of all 21 players who currently have odds to win.

Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford (+300) – A lot of people expected Luck to cash in and head to the NFL this season, especially since Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh left to coach the San Francisco 49ers. Even though he more than likely would have been the No. 1 overall pick, Luck has returned to try and lead the Cardinal to  a National Championship. Luck threw for 3,338 yards and 32 touchdowns while completing 70.7% of his passes. It should come as no surprise that Luck is the overall favorite to win the Heisman, but for him to win the Cardinal have to be in the title hunt.

Denard Robinson, QB, Michigan (+500) – Robinson is a duel threat quarterback who can light up the scoreboard. As a freshman in 2010, Robinson threw for 2,570 yards and 18 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,702 yards and 14 touchdowns.  It will be interesting to see if new head coach Brady Hoke uses Robinson in the same way as former head coach Rich Rodriguez.  Either way expect this kid to make a ton of big plays. The only thing holding him back will be the fact that Michigan likely won’t even win its own conference.

Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina (+500) – Lattimore came into the 2010 season as one of the top freshmen running backs in the country and he didn’t disappoint. He carried it 249 times for 1,197 yards and 17 touchdowns, and also had 29 catches for 412 yards and 2 scores. The expectations are huge in his second season, and with the Gamecocks figuring to compete for an SEC title, he  definitely has a great shot at bringing home the hardware.

LaMichael James, RB, Oregon (+600) - James led the country in rushing with 1,731 yards, and was second in the country with 21 touchdowns. He finished third in the Heisman voting last year. While it will be hard to repeat those numbers from a year ago, this kid is talented enough to run for 2,000, especially with the way Oregon runs their offense. James had three games where he rushed for over 225 yards and scored at least two touchdowns. His stock likely would have been much higher had he not totaled just 49 yards against Auburn in the National Championship Game.

Landry Jones, QB, Oklahoma (+600) – The Sooners are considered to be the No. 1 team heading into the 2011 season. While rankings this early don’t mean much, if Oklahoma lives up to expectations, Jones will without question be in the mix for the Heisman. In 2010, Jones threw for 4,718 yards with 38 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions. As a freshman he threw for just 3,198 yards with 26 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. If he shows that same kind of improvement this season, I see no reason why he can’t surpass the big names ahead of him and not only win the Heisman but also a National Championship.
