2008 Heisman Trophy Watch – Final Rankings
Written December 9, 2008 by Jack Jones
Sam Bradford completed his Heisman campaign with a stellar performance in the Big 12 Championship game against Missouri. The Oklahoma quarterback threw for 384 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 62-21 victory over the #19-ranked Tigers. Bradford’s complete stats for the season are impressive. He’s thrown for 4,464 yards and 48 touchdowns. He’s also lead his team to the BCS National Championship, overcoming a loss earlier in the season to Texas to gain enough momentum in the BCS rankings to earn the right to play in the Big 12 Championship, win that game, and earn the right to play Florida for the national title. Bradford has the highest QB rating of any quarterback in the nation and is a surefire first round NFL draft pick. He’s currently the favorite to win the award for the best player in college football as well. Sportsbook.com has Bradford at -400 to win the 2008 Heisman.
Much like you could make the case for Texas to be playing for the national title instead of Oklahoma, you could make the case that Colt McCoy should be first in line for the Heisman Trophy instead of Bradford. He certainly has the overall stats to warrant consideration. McCoy finished the season with 3,445 yards passing, 32 passing touchdowns, 608 yards rushing, and another 3 touchdowns on the ground. McCoy’s 77.6% completion percentage has already become something of a legend throughout college football. Unfortunately for Colt, when the Longhorns lost out to the Sooners in the BCS, his Heisman hopes were also likely lost.
Tim Tebow has done his best to make his case for a second consecutive Heisman Trophy. He’s now leading the #1 team in the nation after a 31-20 victory over Alabama in the SEC Championship last Saturday. Tebow’s numbers aren’t on par with the rest of the group, but he’s still thrown for 2,506 yards, rushed for 767 yards, and scored a total of 40 touchdowns (28 passing, 12 rushing). What’s been the most impressive about Tebow has been how well he’s performed in pressure situations. Time after time on Saturday the Gators called Tebow’s number when they needed a big play and time after time he delivered. He probably won’t win his second Heisman, but the fact that he is being considered for it is sign enough of how good of a college football player he is.
Graham Harrell was probably one win away from a national title shot and one win away from the Heisman Trophy. The loss to Oklahoma, however, has been too difficult for the team, and for Harrell’s Heisman chances, to recover from. Top to bottom, you could argue that Harrell had the best statistical season of any of the players on this list. He threw for 4,747 yards and 41 touchdowns and completed 71% of his passes. In just about any other season, Graham Harrell would be your Heisman Trophy winner, but in this season, he’s fallen all the way to be the 4th most likely candidate to win the Heisman, at +5000 odds to win, according to Sportsbook.com.
Iowa running back Shonn Greene is also likely to get the invite to New York for the presentation of the Trophy. While that’s an honor in itself, Greene doesn’t have a legitimate shot at winning, not that he wouldn’t be deserving with the season he’s put together.
