History of Bingo
February 27, 2008
Bingo has a long history and has been called several different names over it’s history. Sometimes it was beano, the corn game, and even Housey-Housey. However it was first called “Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’ Italia” by the Italians. Then the French caught wind of the game in the late 1770’s and changed the name to just “Le Lotto.” Le Lotto was a game strictly played among the elite crowd of French aristocrats.
The name Housey-Housey is though to originate in England. This was a game that the British loved to play during both of the World Wars. The Americans went with dice as their game of choice.
The person who is given the most credit for introducing this game to the general American public is Edwin S. Lowe, a traveling salesman who accidentally chanced upon the game at a carnival in Atlanta in 1929. While he made the game popular the word Bingo itself, suggesting a bell’s ring, was added a bit prior in 1925 to announce a win.
