Hornets/Spurs Predictions & Preview

The first second round matchup is ready to go and we are going to break it down and give you our prediction on who we think will be moving on the Western Conference Finals. The New Orleans Hornets rolled past a pretty good Dallas team in the first round, while at the same time the San Antonio Spurs were taking care of business against a very good Phoenix Sun’s team. Both teams won their respected Series 4-1, and will get some much-needed rest for the second round of the playoffs. While the start of the series depends on if the other series are able to close out earl, or go all the way to a game 7. This will be a great matchup for anyone who is an NBA fan. On one side you have Chris Paul and on the other you have Tony Parker, both looked nearly unstoppable in the first round, and its going to be entertaining seeing which one emerges to lead their team to the next round. Lets take a little look at how each team is doing coming into the game, and we will give you our prediction on the winner.

New Orleans Hornets

The Hornets finished the regular season in a surprising 2nd place finish in a very tough Western Conference, that for the first time seen a team win 48 games and not make the playoffs. The Hornets have been led by the amazing play of Chris Paul, who is coming off a series where he torched the Mavericks for 3 double-doubles and a triple-double in the final game of the series. Paul isn’t all the Hornets got as fellow all-star David West is averaging 22.6 points, sharp shooter Peja Stojakovic is averaging 15.8, and the surprise play of Jannero Pargo has him bringing in 14.6 points a game. Either way you look at it this team can hang with the Spurs, and give the defending Champions a great test.

San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs might be the team that enjoys this little break more, as they have older players that will really benefit from a couple extra days rest. This team actually had the same record as the Hornets, but lost in a tie breaker to see who got he 2nd see in the West. The Spurs come into this series really surprising a lot of people, including myself, who thought that the Spurs were showing some signs of age at the end of the regular season. Parker comes in with the 3rd best scoring average in the playoffs, with 29.4. Closely behind him is long time all-star and former MVP Tim Duncan who is averaging 24.8, and just might have the biggest shot of the previous series when he hit that 3 pointer at the end of game 1 to send it to overtime. Manu Ginobili has been relatively quiet for the most of the series, and could be the deciding factor in what should be a great second round matchup.

Winner: San Antonio Spurs

This was a tough one to choose, as we really like this Hornets team, but we are going with the defending Champs on this one. The Spurs just have that way of winning in the playoffs, while we do think the Hornets are only a year or two, or maybe a player away from being big time title contenders. Look for Paul to get his, but we really think that deciding player will be Ginobili. The Hornets are counting on Pargo to keep his play rolling into the second round, but he will likely face a much better defense against the Spurs. The play is on the Spurs; look for this series to go at least 6 if not 7.
