House Edge on the Pass Line
February 27, 2008
If you want to make one of the best bets in the house, then play the pass line in craps. The house edge on this wager is only 1.4%. Now you may ask yourself, why does the casino offer such a great bet if they expect to make a lot of money? Now that’s not a dumb question at all, but it’s a pretty simple one for us to answer.
Don’t just take a look at who wins a single bet but who ends up with the money when the dust settles. First off, the casino knows that there aren’t very many players who are disciplined enough to stick to betting on only the pass line. They know that before long when someone wins a riskier bet like the hardways then they’ll want to go for the riches as well.
Even if you stuck to the pass line only then take a look at the long run. If you bet $10 per wager and made 100 bets then you could expect to win 49 times, and profit $490 and lose 51, and lose $510. The casino will gladly take the $20 and multiply it by the thousands of bets it will see each day, week, and year in order to earn a generous long-term profit.
