Houston 2009 College Football Predictions

Written July 3, 2009 by InfoPlays

2009 Houston College Football PredictionsThe Houston Cougars are the West Division favorites and should be favored to win the C-USA title. A tough non-conference schedule with games against Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Mississippi State will bring out any weaknesses the Cougars may have, but C-USA play is all that truly matters here. The offense returns all of its main skill players, and it will put points on the board similar to their 40.6 points/game last season. Now the defense has to come through to make this a special season in Houston. NCAA football odds are posted and ready for you to wager on. Sportsbook.com should be your #1 choice as they offer 10% bonuses and reduced juice on Friday’s!

Offense: The Cougars return most of their big pieces on offense, with 5,000-yard passer Case Keenum, 1,000-yard rusher Bryce Beall and 1,000-yard wide receiver Tyron Carter. Had Patrick Edwards not broken a leg in the team’s eighth game last season, he likely would have become a 1,000-yard receiver as well. Keenum threw for 44 touchdowns in his first season in the offense designed by Kevin Sumlin and coordinator Dan Holgorsen. He was the C-USA Offensive Player of the Year as a result.

This team is loaded with speedy receivers, led by Carrier who runs a 4.4-second 40-yard dash after catching 80 balls for 1,026 yards and nine touchdowns. L.S. Castile is the big, physical receiver the Cougars lack and now he needs to realize his potential and start performing on game day. Last year’s top tight end in Mark Hafner is gone, but Houston may pick up a little more speed by going with Chaz Rodriquez there this season. Beall was the biggest surprise last season. He barely touched the ball in the first three games, but finished with a freshman school-record 1,247 yards and 13 touchdowns, while averaging 6.3 yards/carry. He was named the C-USA Freshman of the Year at season’s end. The line returns 3 starters, and they also picked up two key junior college transfers in tackle Roy Watts and guard Jarve Dean.

Defense: Five starters return to a defense that game up 30.9 points/game and 413.5 yards/game to finish 91st and 100th in the nation, respectively. Linebacker Marcus McGraw, the MVP of the Armed Forces Bowl victory over Air Force, is one of the C-USA’s most exciting young players. He is a speedy, intelligent playmaker and finished with a team-high 103 tackles. Senior linebacker Matt Nicholson has made tremendous progress from knee surgery and should be back in the lineup to boost this unit.

Sumlin helped out the secondary by landing junior college transfers in safety Jack Candy and cornerback Devin Mays. The front four will be an issue. Losing Phillip Hunt, the C-USA’s Defensive Player of the Year, will hopefully be softened by the improvement of former linebacker Tyrell Graham. He is still learning the ropes at one defensive end position, but the other end will be a work in progress this season. At tackle, sophomore David Hunter has showed promise, while Isaiah Thompson has been too inconsistent.
