Houston Texans 2008 NFL Draft Needs

The Houston Texans made huge strides in 2008 as they finished the season at 8-8. Though that was only good enough for 4th place in the AFC South, its good to see this team finishing at .500 or better. The team seemed find an answer at QB with Matt Schaub, and a big time playing make receiver in Andre Johnson. The team has spent the offseason bringing in guys like CB Jacques Reeves, LB Kevin Bentley, RB Chris Brown. Though these additions will help the team to get better in 2008, they still have some holes to fill. They didn’t lose much from last year’s team, as the biggest names to leave were C Mike Flannagan and CB Von Hutchins. So the team is left to the draft to feel the rest of their needs. Here is what we think is the Texans top 5 needs going into this year’s draft.

1. Cornerback

The addition of Reeves should help this unit, but they will be without starting corner back Dunta Robinson until at least half way through the season. The team needs some help at this position and they could find it with their first pick in the draft at #19. South Florida’s Mike Jenkins would be a great fit for this defense. The draft is pretty solid at this position, so they might wait till round 3 and take a guy like LSU’s Chevis Jackson.

2. Running back

When you have an aged Ahman Green and an unproven Ron Dayne in your backfield coming into the season, then you know its time for an upgrade at this position. The team did help things out with the signing of Brown, but he isn’t a big time threat like they could land in Illinois’s running Rashard Mendenhall. While we think they would be crazy to pass up on this guy there is a good chance he will already be off the board, so they might be stuck on waiting till later in the draft or possibly taking a chance on Arkansas’s Felix Jones.

3. Offensive Tackle

The team has yet to find a solid left tackle since becoming an NFL team not to long ago. While they will likely have to wait till late in the draft to fix this need, as they don’t have a 2nd round pick in this year’s draft. Look for them to go with a guy like Ohio State’s Kirk Barton or Clemson’s Barry Richardson early on day two.

4. Strong Safety

The team needs a safety that can be the big hitter against the run, and be able to be a solid cover guy when needed. C.C. Brown is the current man holding down this spot, but an upgrade needs to be in the making. They might try and find one in this year’s draft such as Michigan’s Jamar Adams

5. Wide Receiver

Though Johnson had a break out year when he was on the field, he spent much of it on the sidelines due to injuries. They really don’t have a solid #2 receiver to compliment him and they might be able to fix that in the draft. They might take a chance on a guy like Florida’s Andre Caldwell or Houston’s Donnie Avery.
