Houston Texans vs Tennessee Titans Lines

Written September 18, 2009 by Black Widow

Texans vs Titans LinesTwo AFC South teams in desperate need of a win meet up Sunday in Week 2 NFL action. The Houston Texans lost 24-7 at home to the New York Jets, so they will need to improve by leaps and bounds if they are to be competitive Sunday. The Tennessee Titans lost 13-10 at Pittsburgh in overtime, a much more acceptable loss but still a painful one. How do the NFL lines set by oddsmakers have this one playing out? Right now, they have the Titans -6.5 over the Texans with a Total Set of 41 points.

The Tennessee Titans ran away with the AFC South last season, compiling the best record in the AFC with a 13-3 mark. The Titans won their first 10 games last season, and earned their first division title since 2002, a division that has been dominated by the Indianapolis Colts this decade. Tennessee played superb defense against Pittsburgh, limiting the Steelers to just 10 points in regulation. But it was their offense that cost them the game, and kicker Rob Bironas. The usually sure-footed Bironas missed a 37-yarder and had a 31-yarder blocker, and if either goes in the Titans likely come away with the victory. Justin Gage stood out as Tennessee’s best offensive weapon, catching seven balls for 78 yards and a score.

The Texans were known for having one of the league’s top offenses last season en route to another 8-8 campaign in 2008. But they looked terrible with the ball in their hands last Sunday, getting outgained by the Jets 462-183. Steve Slaton rushed for 1,282 yards as a rookie last year, but he was limited to just 17 yards on the ground. Andre Johnson led the NFL in catches (115) and yards (1,575) last year, but he was held to four catches for 35 yards Sunday. Matt Shaub has been battling through an ankle injury, and it was clear that he wasn’t the same against the Jets by completing just 18-of-33 passes without throwing a single touchdown. This series has been dominated by the Titans, who are 11-3 in 14 meetings including 6-1 in Nashville. But the Texans did win the last meeting at Reliant Stadium, holding the Titans without a touchdown in a 13-12 victory. It was a bit misleading because at the time the Titans had already clinched a playoff berth. Both teams will be 100% focused heading into this huge showdown Sunday.
