Odds on How Many Majors Tiger Woods Will Win in 2009

Written April 7, 2009 by Steve Janus

how-many-majors-tiger-woods-2009The first of the 4 major tournaments in professional golf, The Masters, starts tomorrow at Augusta National Gold Club, which has me thinking about what kind of year Tiger Woods can have in 2009, more specifically, how many majors the guy can win.  Luckily for me, Sportsbook.com has the odds on just such a thing, and with Tiger having won his first tournament of the season, everyone’s eyes will be on him (not that they wouldn’t have been already) to see what else this already legendary golfer has in store.  Woods already has 14 Major wins under his belt, second only to Jack Nicklaus’s record 18.  Mr. Woods has collected 4 Masters wins, 3 wins in the British Open, 3 US Open wins, and 4 PGA Championship wins.  Tiger’s first Major win came in 1997 when he won the Masters.  Since that date there have been just 3 years in which golf’s main man hasn’t won at least one Major championship (1998, 2003, and 2004).  Woods’s best performance so far was in 2000 when he won 3 Majors and he has earned two Major wins in three different years.

What’s interesting about Tiger’s career is that it really doesn’t seem to matter where he is playing.  He obviously has had one more win at both the Masters and the PGA Championship, but splitting his 14 Major victories nearly evenly over the 4 events is all the more impressive to me, especially when you consider that the Masters is the only Major that is played on the same course every year.

As I mentioned, Sportsbook.com has provided the odds on how many Majors Tiger Woods will win this season.  The favorite in this group of bets is that he will win 1 Major, which currently sits at +150 odds.  Coming in just behind one major win is 0 Majors, which is at +175.  The odds obviously increase after that first win, with 2 Major wins at +275, 3 Majors at +800, and 4 Major wins (known as a Grand Slam) currently at +1500 odds.  Though the odds are stacked against him, if there is anyone in professional golf who can win a Grand Slam at this point in time, it has to be Tigers Woods.  I think it is a testament to just how dominant he is in a sport when his odds at winning at least one Major Tournament this year are better than his odds to win none.  There is no other golfer in the world that could hope to claim that.
