At the beginning of the 2009 college football season no one expected either Bowling Green or Idaho to be playing in a post-season bowl game. However, that’s exactly where these two teams find themselves as they will square off in the Humanitarian Bowl on December 30th. Both teams come into this contest with an overall record of 7-5 straight up and against the spread. Bowling Green went 6-2 in MAC Conference play, finishing third in the MAC East standings behind Temple and Ohio University. The Vandals of Idaho finished fourth in the WAC standings with a 4-4 conference record. The line on this game opened up with Bowling Green as one point favorites but over 60% of the public action has come in on the Falcons which has forced the spread to move to minus two at almost all off-shore and Las Vegas sports books. As of today, our college football lines show Bowling Green as a 1 point favorite.
When Bowling Green has the football, there is no little doubt about what they are going to try and do and that is throw the ball down field. This is a high octane passing attack that is led by quarterback Tyler Sheehan. Sheehan has had an excellent season, throwing for nearly 3,700 yards along with 23 touchdown passes against only 6 interceptions. In fact, Bowling Green ranks 8th in the country in passing yards per game, averaging just over 310 yards per game. Idaho’s secondary could be in for a long day as they have been extremely poor against the pass all year long. They are ranked 114th in the nation in pass defense, surrendering 269 yards a game through the air. This is a big match-up concern that could very well decide who wins this ball game. Idaho’s secondary will be tested early and often and if they can’t rise to the occasion, Sheehan and company might really light up the scoreboard. This game could very well turn in to a shootout as Idaho has a very good offense as well. They rank right behind Bowling Green in passing yards a game, averaging 290.6 yards per game through the air which is 11th best in the country. The difference between these two offenses however is that Idaho is much more balanced as they can also run the football effectively. The Vandals average 160 yards per game on the ground and the Falcons only average 83.6. The solid ground game of Idaho is capable of really gashing this Bowling Green defense as they had trouble stopping the run all season long. They are giving up an average of 195 yards a game rushing which ranks them 103rd in the country. The secondary has done its job all year long but the front seven will have to find a way to slow down the ground game of Idaho.
As mentioned earlier, this game has all the makings of a high scoring affair. Both offenses can score points in bunches so it will come down to which defense is able to step up and play well or whoever has the ball last might win. Bowling Green loves to throw and Idaho’s secondary is one of the worst in the country. Idaho is more balanced and can the football against one of the worst rushing defenses in the country in Bowling Green. This game will be decided by either the secondary of Idaho or the front seven of Bowling Green. Which ever group plays better will probably end up winning this game for their ball club. Odds makers are also expecting a high scoring affair as they have set the total on this game at 68 points!
