NCAA Football Odds: Illinois at Indiana

Written October 14, 2009 by Kyle Hunter

The Illinois Fighting Illini and the Indiana Hoosiers matchup Saturday evening in a game that way be the deciding game between which team is able to stay out of the Big Ten cellar this season. Both of these teams have looked pretty bad, but Indiana didn’t have high expectations surrounding the program, and Illinois definitely did. Both coaches are definitely hoping for something to build off of in this game.

The Fighting Illini of Illinois were picked by many to finish in the top echelon of the Big Ten. In fact, Phil Steele in his popular preseason magazine picked Illinois to tie for second in the Big 10. Things have gone terribly wrong in Champaign, Illinois so far this season. There is a quarterback controversy between Juice Williams and Eddie McGee, but neither quarterback is producing at all on the field, so it is hard for the staff to know which one should get the playing time. Illinois is scoring just 17 points per game, and was shutout by Ohio State last month. The passing attack has completely failed despite having the best wide receiver in the Big Ten in Arrelious Benn. The running game has been alright, but teams have started stacking the box and making them throw the ball. The defense is giving up far too many yards, 409 of them on average each game. In their last three games the defense is allowing 200 yards per game rushing alone.  I you love betting college football and want to get a great bonus this season, get a $500 match bonus with a new account and initial deposit of $500 or more at BetUS!

The Indiana Hoosiers were picked by almost all of the experts to finish at the bottom of the conference. The season has had some high points, but last weekend’s trouncing at Virginia was definitely the low point. The Hoosiers started 3-0, but have now lost 3 in a row and sit at 3-3. Tandon Doss has stepped up as a real playmaker for the Hoosiers offense, and the team is trying to incorporate him more into their offense by the week. The Hoosiers defense has had difficulty getting much of a pass rush, and because of that their pass defense has suffered quite a bit. Teams with dynamic passing attacks have proven the ability to chew up lots of yards on this defense. The Hoosiers need to rebound from last week’s and prove it was an aberration and not a trend.

Illinois opened as 3 point favorites in this game, but the line has since moved to Illinois by just 2 points according to our latest college football point spreads. The opening total for the over/under has been set at 52.5. Illinois is 0-8 against the spread in their last 8 games overall, but Indiana isn’t much better at just 5-11-1 in their last 17. The under is 5-2 in the teams last 7 meetings.

Quite frankly this game will probably not be a pretty one. There is no doubt that the Illini have more talent, but I find it next to impossible to wager on a team that has looked as badly as they have all season. A motivated Indiana will likely show up, but will Illinois step and show any of that potential yet? That is the real question going into this conference showdown.
