Indiana College Football Predictions 2009
Written June 20, 2009 by InfoPlays
This is one of the more experienced Indiana teams in school history. Ben Chappel should provide a strong arm and good leadership at quarterback. Running the pistol offense best suits this unit, especially the running game. If the defense can show improvement, the Hoosiers could make their second bowl game in three seasons. The NCAA football lines have the Hoosiers listed at +6000 to win the 2009 Big Ten Title.
Offense: Indiana’s offense will have a new look this season. The spread offense has been tweaked, with the coaching staff inserting the Pistol formation where the running back lines up directly behind the quarterback in the shotgun formation. The hope is for the Indiana Hoosiers to become a more downhill running team. That becomes even more important now that former QB Kellen Lewis has been dismissed from the team. He was Indiana’s best athlete and could run in open spaces with the best of ‘em. The coaches believe Ben Chappell is ready to lead the team after sharing time with Lewis last season. Helping his cause is talent and depth at running back.
Seniors Bryan Payton and Demetrius McCray, and promising red shirt freshman Darius Willis, are all competing for running back duties. Payton provides power, while McCray is a shake-and-back runner. Head coach Bill Lynch says Willis is going to be special. Seniors Rodger Saffold and Pete Saxon have been starters since their freshman season, and they’ll lead the way on the offensive line. 6-8, 339-pound junior James Brewer appears ready to become a star. Plenty of talent returns at wide receiver with senior Terrance Turner and two wideouts who were impressive last year as true freshman. Tandon Doss and Demarlo Belcher should both be starters this season. Matt Ernest, the second-fastest guy on the team, had an outstanding spring and will push for playing time.

Defense: Indiana’s defense in 2008 allowed 35 points/game, but things can only get better in 2009 due to nine returning starters. Injuries at tackle and to both starting safeties hurt their cause last year, and end Greg Middleton fell off drastically from his 2007 All-American campaign. Middleton needs to return to form, and Jammie Kirlew has to pick up where he left off last season at the other end. If this happens, the Hoosiers could have one of the best end tandems in the country.
The Hoosiers look solid at linebacker heading into the fall with the return of starters Matt Mayberry and Will Patterson, plus a promising youngster in Tyler Replogle. Mayberry has the talent to become one of the Big Ten’s elite linebackers after finishing 10th in the league with 89 tackles a year ago. Austin Thomas and Nick Polk should be fully recovered from knee injuries this fall to provide IU with an outstanding pair of safeties. Moving former wide receiver Ray Fisher to cornerback in the spring should help alleviate some of the concern at this position.
