College Football Odds: Indiana at Michigan
Written September 24, 2009 by Kyle Hunter
The Michigan Wolverines and the Indiana Hoosiers were both at the bottom of the Big Ten standings last season, but both have started off this season 3-0 in the non-conference schedule. Michigan clearly has the higher profile victories and is now expected to do a lot more in conference, while Indiana has played a very weak schedule and is expected to struggle mightily as the conference play begins. Michigan seems to have found the quarterback they need for Rich Rodriguez’s system in Tate Forcier. Forcier is a very good runner and a pretty efficient passer. While he is just a freshman he plays with a great amount of poise and seems to be the offensive leader already. Denard Robinson also gets a little bit of playing time at the quarterback position, but he has primarily been a runner when he comes into the game. Brandon Minor has clearly worked hard in the offseason and has been a strong force at the running back position thus far this year. The Wolverines defense has shown itself a little better than last season, but it still needs to improve throughout the season. The Wolverines defense has given up quite a few yards through the air this season.
Indiana had been a program that was on the move upward a few years ago, but it seems that they have found their way back to the bottom of the conference again. After dismissing star quarterback Kellen Lewis for violating teams the Hoosiers have been without a star on either side of the ball. Ben Chappell has stepped into the quarterback position and has done an adequate job so far this season, but he lacks the explosiveness they will likely need. The Hoosiers squeaked by two inferior opponents in their first two games at home this season before putting it to Akron on the road last weekend. In order for this Indiana team to be competitive we’ll have to see a running game established and the defense must improve quickly.
The Wolverines opened as 19.5 point favorites, but college football odds makers have moved it to 20 points at most sports books now. It is no surprise that the Wolverines would be pretty big favorites at home in this matchup because of how much improvement they have shown from last season. This will be the first real test this season for the Indiana football team. The over/under for the game currently sits at 54 points.
I would look for the Wolverines to try to establish a running game early and often in this one. Indiana can’t let Michigan control the ball too much or the defense will wear down quickly. Indiana will likely try to throw the ball quite a bit, but they’ll have to protect the football to have much of a chance. Tate Forcier and the Michigan offense will probably not have much of a problem scoring quite a few points on this Indiana defense. I look for the Wolverines to cover the 20 points in this matchup as they try to make a statement to start out big ten conference play.
