Indiana at Penn State NCAA Football Odds

Written November 11, 2009 by Hector Garza

Penn State had their Big 10 Championship hopes dashed in a 24-7 loss to Ohio State.  Despite playing at home, the Nittany Lions were out-gained 353 yards to 201, and are looking to salvage a BCS bowl game by winning out.  This Saturday they welcome 4-6 Indiana to Beaver Stadium for noon ET kickoff.  The Hoosiers are the underdogs by 25 1/2 points with the total set at 51 according to the college football odds.

Indiana is riding a rough 3 game losing streak, and has lost six of their last 7 for a 1-5 conference record.  They gave Wisonsin a good run last week, but ended up losing 31-28.  Their top rusher is Darius Willis, who’s gained 465 yards and 5 scores, while Ben Chappell leads the team at the QB position.  Chappell has been questionable in his decisions, throwing 13 td’s and 12 int’s, despite having a stable of good receivers.  His top two targets have been Tandon Doss and Damarlo Belcher, who have combined for 113 catches, 1454 yards and 7 scores.

The Hoosiers have done a good job scoring with 27 td’s, but have allowed 34.  The defense is mediocre at best, and is giving up over 410 ypg.  In the takeaway department they have registered 14 interceptions, but the secondary still needs to improve greatly on the 250 ypg they’re allowing.   Last week against Wisconsin they were gashed on the ground for 294 yards, and unless there’s vast improvement Penn State will be looking to do the same.  College football picks can come in handy, especially if you’re looking to take advantage of the $500 BONUS that Betus is currently offering.

On average, the Nittany Lions are putting up 28.3 ppg in a balanced attack rushing (17 td’s) and passing (18 td’s).  Despite being shut down against Ohio State, QB Darryl Clark has had success throwing 18 td’s to 8 int’s for 2283 yards.  He’s joined in the backfield by RB Evan Royster, who has proven himself capable with 895 yards and 5 scores.  WR’s Graham Zug and Derek Moye have both had great years, each accounting for 5 td’s.  Look for all of these players to bounce back nicely against a suspect Indiana defense.

Defense is where Penn State has been dominant, which is why the 353 yards given up to Ohio State was such a suprise.  They’re among the top in the nation at scoring, allowing a mere 10.8  ppg, and have held opponents to 7 or fewer points 5 times this year.  On the year QB’s have thrown a total of 5 td’s to 10 interceptions, and the running defense has been excellent allowing under 100 ypg.   As a unit they’ve given up 10 scores and are undefeated against the Hoosiers.

Indiana is doing their best to be bowl eligible, but don’t expect them to come away with a win on the road.  They can score points, but are currently winless in 12 contests against Penn State.  Joe Paterno will have the Nittany lions ready to roar this Saturday, and they should be able to put up big numbers against a suspect defense.  The play here is for Indiana to cover the spread, as they’ve lost to all opponents but one by 19 or less.
