Indianapolis Colts 2008 NFL Draft Needs

Written April 19, 2008 by Jack Jones

The Indianapolis Colts failed to defend their 2006 NFL Championship, but still managed to have another very successful season. The Colts went 13-3 in the very tough AFC South, but were unable to beat the Chargers at home in the 2nd round of the playoffs. The team still has Peyton Manning so you know they will be back at in 2008. The Colts have been pretty quiet this offseason and seem content on building on the team from last year in the draft. They have yet to bring in a free agent, but have lost starting OG Jake Scott and TE Ben Utecht. With not many holes left to fill it will be interesting on who the Colts go after when they first pick late in the second round. Here is a look at what positions the Colts will be looking at when they are on the clock.

1. Defensive End

As long as Dwight Freeney is able to come back from a foot injury, then this unit should be fine in 2008. The thing is you can’t ever seem to have enough pass rushers and could find a solid guy to use in the rotation next season. Not picking till round 2 will limit their options, but a guy like Purdue’s Cliff Avril or possibly Miami’s Calais Campbell if he continues to fall.

2. Tight End

The team has a pro bowl tight end in Dallas Clark, but it gets pretty thin behind Clark. The team will likely spend a pick in this year’s draft on a guy who can come in and be used more as a blocker and continue to use Clark as a receiver threat. Another Purdue guy in Dustin Keller could still be on the board, or Texas A&M’s Martellus Bennett.

3. Wide Receiver

It looks as though last year’s first round pick Anthony Gonzalez was a good one, and the team still has pro bowl receivers Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison. The thing is Harrison is getting up there in age, and the team needs to start thinking about the future at this position. A guy like LSU’s Early Doucet could be a great fit if he is still on the board.

4. Offensive Line

With the loss of Jake Scott and the team lacking some depth at the tackle position, it would be of no surprise to see the Colts take a lineman with their first pick in round 2. If they do choose to do so they might look at a guy like Kansas’s Anthony Collins or maybe wait a little later for a guy like Texas tackle Tony Hills.

5. Linebacker

The team isn’t hurting to bad here as well, but is a little weak at the middle linebacker spot. Gary Brackett did a solid job in 2007, but an upgrade here could make a bigger difference than one might first think. The team could spend a late pick to serve as a backup and possibly a future starter here. The draft isn’t too deep here so they might have to wait on this one.
