Indianapolis Colts Predictions 2009

Written July 15, 2009 by Nick Scarpa

indianapolis-colts-nfl-predictions-2009The Indianapolis Colts will be missing a couple of familiar faces this season when they start the season without Head Coach Tony Dungy and WR Marvin Harrison. Harrison will be the only starter not returning from an Indianapolis team that has made seven consecutive playoff appearances. The biggest change in player personnel will be in the form of anatomy, with Peyton Manning returning to his normal self with a fully recovered knee. The coaching personnel has a new look with former QB’s coach Jim Caldwell in the captain’s chair as Head Coach and Larry Coyer stepping in as the defensive coordinator.

Peyton Manning never seemed quite like himself after missing all of training camp with a knee injury last season. This year the well-oiled Indianapolis scoring machine should be clicking on all cylinders from the start. Offensive Coordinator Tom Moore is a gifted mind that is precise in his play-calling. The impact of Marvin Harrison’s absence could be felt but his replacement Anthony Gonzales is very capable in the #2 slot. #1 WR Reggie Wayne is an All-Pro that has some of the softest hands in the NFL and TE Dallas Clark is an outstanding deep threat. The running game sputtered behind an injured O-Line last season but RB’s Joseph Addai and rookie Donald Brown should form a quality duo. The O-Line is solid but depth is a concern.  The pre-season NFL odds list the Colts at +160 to win the AFC South in 2009.

The Colts undersized defensive front is a little beefier this season and should be among the NFL’s top-10 units. DE’s Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis are terrors off the edge harassing QB’s. The LB’s are fast and deep but they must play better than they did a year ago. The real strength of the Colts defense is in their supremely talented secondary that allows the Colts to use different looks. New Coordinator Larry Coyer is a Tampa-2 disciple that will rely on his defensive personnel to read and react. Former Coordinator Ron Meeks was a decent coach, will his absence be felt? Special Teams is a concern with spotty return and coverage units. Kicker Adam Vinatieri is also past his prime and overpaid.

The Colts are not getting any younger and there is a sense of urgency to win the big one again soon. Peyton Manning will always keep the Colts among the NFL’s elite but the AFC South is the AFC’s version of the NFC East. The personnel is in place to make another deep run into the playoffs but the coaching turnover and weak special teams will keep them from winning it all.  Bet the Colts at +1200 to win the Super Bowl this season.

Typo alert. Article states, “New Coordinator Ron Meeks is a Tampa-2 disciple that will rely on his defensive personnel to read and react.” The next sentence refers to Meeks as the former coordinator, which is correct, of course. The new coordinator is Larry Coyer.
