Iowa vs Iowa State Odds, Betting Line & Predictions
Written September 10, 2009 by Rock Henderson
One of the most intense and underrated rivalry games in the nation will take place Saturday morning in Ames, IA. The Hawkeyes dominated the game defensively last year to take back the Cy-Hawk Trophy with a 17 to 5 victory. The game was tied at 3 at the end of three quarters before a punt return for a touchdown broke open the game for the Hawks. Iowa leads the overall series 21-11 but the teams have split the last two meetings and the Cyclones took 7 out of 10 from 1997 to 2007. The current college football lines show Iowa as a 6 point favorites over Iowa State with the over/under set for 46.5 points.
The Iowa State Cyclones opened the 2009 season with a 34 to 17 win against FCS opponent North Dakota State. 9 starters returned on an offensive unit that averaged over 25 points/game last season. QB Austen Arnaud threw for 227 yards and two touchdowns as a new offensive system was installed by ex Rice Offensive Coordinator Tom Herman. The Clones racked up 442 yards of total offense but could not put the Jackrabbits away as the score was 24 to 17 in the third quarter. The defense was not as impressive as they were hit for 210 yards on the ground. They will need to find a quick answer for stopping the run as Iowa has one of the top offensive lines in the country. ISU snapped a 10 game losing streak in Paul Rhodes first game as a head coach and look to equal their 2008 win total of two on Saturday.
Getting back to back blocked field goal attempts to secure a 17-16 win against a Division 1-AA opponent is not exactly how you want to start off a season if you are the 21st ranked Iowa Hawkeyes. In what will be one of the most bizarre finished in college football this year, the Hawks blocked two FG attempts from 40 yards out after UNI recovered the first attempt and got a second chance to stun a crowd of 70,000 plus. After a lackluster first half, QB Ricky Stanzi finished 22 of 34 for 242 yards and one touchdown pass to Tony Moeaki who was the recipient of 10 of the 22 completions. The Hawks struggled to get anything any sort of running attack established as they tallied only 87 yards on the ground. Iowa was missing OL Kyle Calloway who was suspended one game for an OWI on a moped (not a joke) during the off season but he will be in the starting line up this weekend. The secondary was suspect against the spread offense of UNI as they gave up 270 yards through the air. The Hawks seem to always struggle against spread offenses as defensive coordinator plays a conservative 4-3 that does not like to blitz often. The Black and Gold could be in for a long afternoon if they don’t figure out a way to combat yet another spread offense this weekend.
The visiting team in this series has lost 5 straight games and only 3 of the last 15 have been decided by 7 points or less. ISU has not scored a touchdown against Iowa’s defense for 10 straight quarters but that trend should be broken this year. If you can get 7 points in this game, take it and run, but I will even settle for 6.
Rock’s Score Prediction: Iowa 24, Iowa State 21
Rock’s Pick: Take Iowa State +6

Got something to say?

First of all iowa state didn’t play the jack rabbits thursday; but the bison. Iowa state has proven that offensive production hasn’t been an issue in terms of progression over the season a year ago. Time and time again “professional odds makers” take iowa over iowa state in ames. Time and time again they get burned. Do they want to make money off this game or not?! Iowa 6 pt favorites? Obviously they don’t follow this series very closely (to their demise) or the games’ intricacies. Cyclones by 10 book it!
