Iowa vs Penn State Football Betting Odds & Spread

Written November 5, 2008 by Jason Lowry

Editors Note: Jason Lowry has a TOP PLAY going on this one, as its one of the best plays he has found for this weekend.

This week when the Penn State Nittany Lions travel to Iowa City to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes it will be a game for the Hawkeyes to show everyone they are a much better team than their record shows, and for the Nittany Lions they are taking another step in earning a spot in the National Championship game. The oddsmakers think the Nittany Lions will do just that, as Penn State comes in 7.5 point favorites over the Hawkeyes at Bookmaker.com

The Nittany Lions come into this one fresh off a bye week and their most recent win on the road against Ohio State, so it’s going to be tough for the Hawkeyes to pull off the upset this week. The Nittany Lions have put up some big numbers on the offensive side of things season, but last week they had their lowest output of the season scoring just 13 points against the Buckeyes. Starting quarterback Daryll Clark had to miss most of the game against the Buckeyes and backup Pat Devlin led the team to the win in the 2nd half. That doesn’t really say much about Devlin as he didn’t even attempt a pass in the game, and it could be a big hit to this team if he has to start this game. The Nittany Lions can run the football with the best, but without Clark under center the Hawkeyes would be able to put a lot of men up front to stop the run.

The Nittanny Lions defense could solve any problems the offense might have, as their strength this weekend of stopping the run, is the exact key to beating the Hawkeyes this week. As they have one of the best backs in the Big 10 in Shonn Greene. Its likely not good news for Greene as this Nittany Lions defense held Beanie Wells and Terrelle Pryor to just 61 combined yards on the ground. Look for the Hawks to struggle to move the football against this defense. Bet Penn State -7.5 at Bookmaker.com

The Hawkeyes loss last week against Illinois 24-27 was pretty much the same old story for this team, as they have now loss 4 games by a combined 12 points this season, and many Hawkeyes fans likely think this team is better than their record shows. The Hawkeyes success is large part due to the surprise success of running back Shonn Greene who has come off not even playing football last year to being the only back in the country to rush for a 100 yards in every game this season. Greene is the key to the Hawkeyes have a chance in this one, as he has to get at least something going in this one. The Hawkeyes passing game isn’t the best and quarterback Ricky Stanzi has been prone to make a key mistake by giving the ball away, but his arm will likely be the Hawkeyes best shot at making big plays.

The Hawkeyes defense will likely need a little help from the home crowd this week, as they face the toughest offense they have seen all year. This unit has that ability to step up and play big, but it will be whether the young guys can keep from making big mistakes and letting the Nittany Lions turn this one into a blowout. The Hawkeyes will have to be very good against the run, as they can’t let Penn State run over them or this unit will be nothing come the 4th quarter. Look for the Hawkeyes to at least start strong, but we don’t know if they will have enough to finish. Bet Iowa +7.5 at Bookmaker.com
