Iowa State at Kansas College Football Odds

Like many other Big 12 teams, Kansas has had no problem putting up points on the scoreboard. The question will be whether Iowa State can muster up some competition as they take on the Jayhawks Saturday at 12:30 p.m. EDT in Lawrence, KS. Kansas is one of 13 teams in the BCS that is still undefeated and is coming off of a bye week, which is a major reason the current college football betting lines show them giving 19.5 points on the spread. The total is set at 58.
Todd Reesing is a big reason for the 4-0 record and early season success. The QB has led the team with over 300 throwing ypg, and over 40 ppg in what has thus far been an efficient unit. It’s a balanced attack as a surprise running game is averaging over 200 ypg with true freshman RB Toben Opurum and RB Jake Sharp leading the charge. Sharp is expected back this week after sitting out 2 weeks ago with a leg injury. While they’ve only given up 4 turnovers, opposing teams have been able to pressure Reesing, as evidenced by the 5 sacks against Southern Miss. Another reason for the so far undefeated season is the stop unit. Kansas has limited opponents to an average of 310 ypg, and has effectively stopped the ground games with only 59.2 ypg rushing. They’ve been impressive in their ability to pressure opposing teams by recording 15 sacks, and they feel there’s no reason why that success can’t continue in their conference home opener. While the offense has committed 4 turnovers, the defense has been getting the job done recording forcing 7 turnovers of their own.
Last year Iowa State won a total of two games, and their defense gave up almost 500 points yards and 42 ppg. This year they’ve shown improvement, allowing less than 360 yards and 20 ppg. They’ll be tested against the Jayhawks balanced and explosive offense. They have had success getting in the backfield, and will try to exploit Kansas’s weakness in that area by building on their 9 sacks so far this year.
The Cyclones lost a heartbreaker last week with 32 seconds left on the clock. They drove 64 yards in 1:17 against Kansas State only to have the extra point blocked for a 24-23 loss. QB Austin Arnaud had another big game, throwing for 2 td’s and rushing for 84 yards and another td. The dual threat Arnaud has compiled 5 rushing td’s and 6 passing for over 1,000 yards of offense, and will no doubt be the focal point of the Jayhawks D.
Kansas is ranked 16th in the nation and is hoping for their 10th straight home victory over a Big 12 North opponent. Iowa State, which hasn’t won a road game over a ranked team in nearly 20 years, is 3-2 with a new attitude under first year head coach Paul Rhoads. For State to stand a chance, they can’t allow Reesing, who’s thrown for 572 yards, 7 td’s and one interception against the Cyclones in 2 starts, to continue to have success. While this would be a huge upset, Kansas is too strong on both sides of the ball to lose the game.
