Iowa State v. Kansas Football Odds & Picks
Written October 1, 2008 by Jack Jones

Saturday the Iowa State Cyclones host the Kansas Jayhawks in Big 12 Conference play at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa. Kansas is looking to put an early season loss to South Florida as far behind them as they can. They want to show the football world that they are deserving of their #16 ranking. Iowa State tries to get back on track on their home turf after a pair of tough road losses. The odds at BetUS show Kansas as a 12-point favorite over Iowa State, with the total set at 52.5.
The Cyclones got off to a red hot start with wins over their first two opponents. Granted, they beat teams they should have, winning 44-17 over South Dakota State and then 48-28 over Kent State. The Clones were able to keep it close in their next two contests, but came out on the losing end against both Iowa and UNLV.
Iowa State struggled on offense last week, gaining just 37 yards and one first down in the first half against UNLV. The running game in particular was able to step it up in the second half, but by that time the damage was done. ISU managed to send the game to overtime, eventually losing the game by 3 points.

There are some big concerns on defense as well for the Cyclones, who have been giving up big chunks of yardage and lots of points to teams that do not have very potent offenses. Iowa State always plays well on their home field, however, so expect them to get a boost from an enthusiastic crowd in Ames Saturday. Kansas looked to be on their way to another impressive season with dominating wins over Florida International and Louisiana Tech, but then had a very disappointing loss on the road against the South Florida Bulls, 37-34. The Jayhawks recovered rather quickly with a solid win over Sam Houston State. A lot of people felt like Kansas had a real to contend with Missouri as the best team in the North Division of the Big 12, but they will need to prove themselves on the road in their opener Saturday against Iowa State.
Kansas QB Todd Reesing is the engine that makes the Kansas offense work. When he’s on there aren’t many teams that can slow him down. Reesing is coming off of a 356 yard performance last week, completing 23 of 38 attempts with 2 TDs and 0 INTs. Kansas fans will be expecting another big week out of their QB against an Iowa State defense that has shown a tendency to give up the big play.
There are two knocks on the Jayhawks so far this year. First of all, they don’t run the ball very often or very well and that leads to some quick three-and-out type series, giving their opponents plenty of opportunities to stay in the game. Second, the KU offense has struggled at times to get started. They usually end up finishing strong, but against a more prepared opponent they might not have that luxury.
The odds for the game are currently set with the home team, Iowa State as a 13-point underdog. That’s some big respect for the Jayhawks considering they have yet to notch their first road win of 2008.
