Iowa at Wisconsin College Football Odds

Written October 14, 2009 by Rock Henderson

The Iowa Hawkeyes will take their 11th ranking on the road when they clash with Big Ten rival Wisconsin on Saturday. Iowa is off to their best start since 1985 after their 30-28 victory over Michigan bumped the Hawks record to 6-0 for the season as it was their 10th win in a row, good enough for the second longest streak in the nation behind Florida. Wisconsin was faced with the daunting task of traveling to Ohio State last weekend and came out on the short end 33-14. Brett Bielema and the Badgers moved the ball with efficiency, but QB Scott Tolzien threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns including one inside the red zone that led to Wisconsin’s first loss of the season. The Badgers return to the comfy confines of Camp Randall Stadium where they are 4-0 on the year. A quick look at the college football odds for this game shows that Wisconsin is favored by 3 points due to the home field advantage.

It’s not often that a losing team gains almost 200 more yards than the victor and loses by 18 points but that is exactly what Wisconsin managed to do last Saturday at Ohio State. The Buckeyes scored three touchdowns that were not on the offensive end which led to 21 of their 31 points. Junior Scott Tolzien managed to throw for 250 yards, but turned the ball over in key situations and was also sacked six times. The Badger running game was unable to get on track as they totaled only 118 yards on 44 carries after gaining 295 yards the week before against Minnesota. Coach Bielema had to be pleased by the play of his defense as they held the Buckeyes to just 184 yards total offense. Wisconsin cannot afford an early deficit against a talented Hawkeye defense that thrives on turning turnovers into points. RB John Clay will need to run hard in between the tackles and take pressure off of Tolzien to make plays.  If you plan to do any football betting this season, there’s simply no excuse not to take advantage of the $500 match bonus at BetUS that is now available to our readers!

Winning is often never pretty in the Big Ten and the Iowa Hawkeyes are definitely living by that mantra in the early going. The Hawks needed an interception with less than a minute to go of a Denard Robinson pass to hang on and beat a young Michigan team at home. QB Ricky Stanzi continues to make questionable decisions after an interception on his first pass attempt in the Michigan game put Iowa in a quick 7-0 hole. Stanzi did bounce back, throwing for 284 yards and two touchdown passes to tight end Tony Moeaki. The Iowa rushing attack was held to just 83 yards on the ground and will have to improve on that number if they want to be victorious in their next two games on the road. The success of the Hawkeyes season could very well be decided in the upcoming two weeks when they travel to Wisconsin and to Michigan State. If they can manage to split the next two games in a worst case scenario they might have a chance to play for the Big Ten title at Ohio State in November.

The Hawkeyes are remarkably three point dogs on the road against this Wisconsin team. Vegas didn’t like this Iowa team at Penn State either and look what happened. Iowa has won five out of seven against the Badgers by an average of 16 points. Wisconsin’s game is the power running attack and that is why Iowa is good against. Tolzien has shown he is prone to make mistakes when pressured and he can expect to be under plenty of it Saturday. Play: Iowa +3
