Is Video Poker Draw Poker?
Written February 27, 2008 by Jack Jones
If you think draw poker is the same as video poker, then there are purists out there that would look at you and scoff. However, if you look at it this way, video poker is just you playing against the machine. The machine displays the cards as graphic images on the screen and the player has to place a stake. Then they are dealt five cards from a standard 52-card deck with a chance to then discard any number of unwanted cards in order to draw an equal number of replacements from the cards the remain in the deck.
You can argue about what the word “draw” means all day and night, but in both table draw poker and video draw poker there is a second round of cards during the hand in which you are allowed to discard some of your cards and draw more wit the hopes of improving your hand.
So even though I fall more on the side of the purist, I can’t argue with the fact that video poker is a form of draw poker.
