I took care of business with the free picks on the New Year’s Day Bowl games so hopefully I can build up your bankroll a little more with this winner:

Alabama -8.5

I’m not buying in to the Tide facing a letdown here from losing to the Florida Gators in the national title game. Alabama has had a great season and while they would like to have been playing in a bigger bowl, they are still in the BCS. This Tide team still has a shot at 13 wins, which would be a great accomplishment. The SEC is a superior conference to the WAC and almost every other league in the nation. So far in the bowls these teams have been shutting down opposing offenses and I think that trend will hold up here. The only strong defense that Utah faced all year was against TCU, and that took a late touchdown just for the Utes to get to 13 points. Bama has held their opponents to below their average points scored total in every game this season so don’t underestimate just how dominant this unit has been. Another thing that the Tide want to make a statement on is that Utah is undefeated. Don’t think that that Alabama isn’t going to want to erase that 0 in Utah’s record, kind of like Georgia did last year to Hawaii when they won in a 41-10 rout. It’ll be the same situation as you saw last year as the Mountain West just doesn’t have the same talent as the SEC so expect a blowout here.
