Jack’s Free Sports Picks: 2/10

Written February 10, 2009 by Jack Jones

nets-cheerleadersWe are on a pretty impressive run right now guys so hopefully you are making some decent money and having a great time along the way. Yesterday brought us another big winner as the 20* No Brainer on the Bucks won pretty easily.  We also cashed in on the free pick with the Clippers/Bobcats UNDER in a game that never got close to the total.  A split with our premium CBB as Missouri tanked in the first half only to give me false hope near the end, and then Rider decided to show up in the second half and give us the blowout we expected all along.

On to Tuesday, where we have three premium plays that I feel pretty good about, including our 20* Tuesday No Brainer play coming in college basketball.  We are now 12-1 on our last 13 with basketball BEST BETS and once again I like what we are playing tonight.  Also on the premium side you’ll find a pair of NBA winners so let’s shoot for another night of solid profits.  Grab my package now at the Jack Jones home page or take a look at some of the NCAA basketball picks & NBA picks being released by our other top handicappers.

Free Premium Picks: Comment on my free picks article for today over at Betfirms.com. Tell me why you agree or disagree with today’s free picks and get today’s top play for free! ***Note: if I receive your reply after 5pm EST on weekdays and 2pm EST on weekends, you will get the following day’s pick.  I send the free premium pick out in one batch late in the day, so if you post after they’ve been sent you’ll get tomorrow’s play.

Free Picks for Tuesday

Remember that these are the weakest plays I’ve picked out, and will not be playing them personally. The best bets on the board will always be available only to premium subscribers. Where do I find these lines? Check out our NBA odds and college basketball lines pages to see which sportsbook has the best number!

New Jersey Nets +5.5 over San Antonio at Bodog

The Spurs might be in for a let down here against the Nets, but since New Jersey has lost 12 straight to San Antonio, I think you’ll see their best efforts here tonight.  The Spurs are in the middle of their longest road trip of the season, and are coming off a big 105-99 win over the Celtics.  New Jersey has been playing better recently, winning four straight before losing in Orlando on Sunday.  The line on this game is so high due to the injury to Vince Carter, but Devin Harris is the new leader of this team so I think the books over-valued the Carter injury here.

Miami-Ohio -7.5 over Central Michigan at Bookmaker

The RedHawks have beaten Central Michigan 13 straight times and have won four straight games both straight-up and against the spread. This team is now 7-2 in MAC play.  The Chippewas on the other hand have dropped three straight games to fall to 3-6 in the conference.  The reason Miami has been so dominant recently is their effort on defense, holding teams to just 57.6 ppg.  Michael Bramos has been doing the work on offense with his 17 ppg average, while down low Tyler Dierkers is putting up 9.1 points and nearly 8 rebounds.  How is Central Michigan going to score against this defense when they are only averaging 63.3 ppg?

Free Pick Records:

CBB: 34-21
NBA: 12-14
NHL: 2-0 (+265)
CFB: 3-1
NFL: 4-1

Agree totally with the NJ pick. They always keep it close at home and SA has to be getting tired.

Hard to doubt any of your picks… But also hard to bet against Duncan and the Spurs. San Antonio is a veteran team and capable of turning on the switch at any time.

It’s hard to disagree with Jack, but I actually have a little concern with this New Jersey pick. San Antonio is 14-9 ATS on the road this season, while New Jersey is 11-15 ATS at home. Also, New Jersey is 1-6 ATS when they are 5-6.5 point dogs. I’ll play with Jack with this one because he’s been so hot, but I’m going to tread lightly.

On the other hand, I like the Ohio pick. Ohio has dominated this matchup recently, and I like to pick a good defensive them against a poor offensive team.

Keep up the great work Jack, and nice work on the picture again today. ;)

Good defenses taking on poor offenses normally mean good things for us. I’m not a big fan of trends, but you made some solid points on why the Nets aren’t a bigger play today.

I have taken SAS moneyline on this game, because I can’t see them losing here. Now you have me worried that the Nets may have a chance. You have been right on the money on the free side, and the premium picks, keep up the good work.

I don’t have an idea about the MAC pick (even though I’m originally from Ohio). But, on the NBA side, I’m leaning heavy spurs -6. We’ll see.

You have been on a roll, but are under .500 on your NBA free picks and I think that continues trend tonight. The Spurs are focused and try to make the rodeo road trip the real start to their run for the championship. The Spurs are a 100% healthy and proved that Sunday against Boston without Parker even getting into a rythm. This will be a bounce back game for Parker. Devon Harris is a good point guard but even if Carter plays tonight the only thing the Nets can do is hope to keep it close. Spurs by at least 8. Got Spurs -5 at betus.

I agree with your Miami pick but on the nets they are to inconsistant in scoring point unsually bet the under when the nets are involved.

Your Miami pick is clearly the right side, however the nets are to inconsistant in putting up points go with the total under when the Nets are invovled.

Regarding the pick Miami Ohio (-7.5) over Central Michigan, I won’t have more than a token wager as, although it is the better side just (I make it Miami Ohio by 8), I think it is marginal to take 10/11.

The major point to make here is the importance of the number. Numbers in the 5-to-8 range are crucial becausde the favourite has a great chance of covering even when taking only a small lead into the last moments because of the deliberate fouling situation causing the result to cross the number.

Therefore pay great attention to the exact number and the philosophy of the underdog, if possible. At what point (of margin losing by in the last minute or two) will THIS team decide to play it out rather than fouling?

I personally think marginal March Madness entries should turn on which team fouls least in this sort of situation. Therefore there is certainly a team and/or coaching philosophy issue.

Adrian – again you post a great comment that everyone should take the time to read. Excellent point about key numbers in basketball. Everyone knows about 3 and 7 in football, but not everyone thinks there is such a thing in basketball.

Nets beat a great denver team by 40 last home game and they’re gonna come out strong against another west power tongiht, san antonio is coming off a hard-fought game in beantown and will have a little letdown tongiht, i dont think they cover.

Miami-ohio has been a decent team all season and they have great talent, central mich is nowhere near the team miami is and a blowout may be in order tonight,

    Good Luck Jack

First lets deal with the Nets game, one thing to mention is the line is now +4.5 for the Nets which makes me like the Spurs more.Just looking at some trends this year gives us a couple reasons to take S.A.,first on 1 days rest the Spurs are 14-8-2 ats, while the nets are 10-11 ats.

Then lets look at home and away records,SA-16-8,Nets 11-15 and have a better road record than home, which is not normal for the NBA,then at home the nets are 11-15 ats, while the spurs are 14-9-1 ats on the road this season. Now I dont like giving points to the home team but with Carter being ?? and the Spurs having a real tuff time against the Nets at home last time they played I just see them playing hard the whole game.

Now the Miami Ohio game,I cant find any reason not to take them against this team,Miami O is really playing well and seem to have gotten over the lost of Hays without any problems and are doing very well in conf. Now C.Mich injuries seem to have hurt them and have no defense to stop anyone and even though they can score some points, cant see them scoring many against this tuff Miami O defense.

I do find it strange that the line opened at 8 and now is 7.5,but either way Miami rolls in this one. Thanks Jim

Jim – solid reasoning and thanks for the insightful comments.

One thing to note about CBB line movements this year: if you go AGAINST the line movement, like Miami-Ohio tonight, you would win 50.4% of your bets. While not a profitable % on it’s own, you shouldn’t be scared off by a line move.
