Jacksonville Jaguars 2008 NFL Draft Needs
Written April 19, 2008 by Jack Jones
The Jacksonville Jaguars were pretty impressive last season as they finished up the regular season at 11-5, but were still a couple games behind the division leading Indianapolis Colts. So far the Jaguars have been pretty busy this offseason, they have picked up WR Jerry Porter, WR Troy Williamson, CB Drayton Florence, and QB Cleo Lemon. On the other hand they did see some big names from last season find other places to play. They traded away DT Marcus Stroud, and lost CB Aaron Glenn, backup QB Quinn Gray, and S Sammy Knight. So though the team is poised for another big season in 2008, they will still need to address some positions in this year’s draft. Here is a look at the top 5 positions we think they Jaguars will go after when they are on the clock.
1. Defensive End
The team currently is solid on the right side with defensive end Reggie Hayward, but he really isn’t much of a pass rusher that the team needs. So they will be looking for a solid guy to put some pressure on the quarterback. This might come with their first pick in the draft at #26. They are looking at Clemson’s Phillip Merling and Miami’s Calais Campbell.
2. Strong Safety
With the loss of Knight the team will be looking for a solid replacement here. They are pretty set at free safety with last year’s pick of Reggie Nelson. The draft isn’t too deep here but the team could pick up a guy Arkansas State’s Tyrell Johnson or Arizona State’s Josh Barrett.
3. Defensive Tackle
With the loss of Stroud in the middle they are little thin at this position. They still have big John Henderson to secure on of the spots, who was pretty solid in 2007. There has been talk that the team might go after North Carolina’s Kentwan Balmer with their first round pick.
4. Offensive Linemen
The team could use some depth here as well. If the season were to start today they wouldn’t have much of a problem, but a solid backup is a must in this league. The team will likely wait till later in the draft to grab a guy here. A guy like Oregon State G Roy Shuening or UTEP T Oniel Cousins could wind up being great fits here.
5. Cornerback
Even with the addition of Florence to roam opposite of star Rasheen Mathis, the team could use another solid guy here for nickel and dime packages. They currently have Brian Williams in this spot, but you can’t go wrong with having to many solid CBs. They might take a chance on a guy like Boise State’s Orlando Scandrick or Kent States Jack Williams late in the draft.
