Jacksonville Jaguars at Houston Texans NFL Point Spread

Written September 24, 2009 by Black Widow

The Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans renew their AFC South rivalry in Week 3. The Texans come in riding high after their come-from-behind 34-31 victory over Tennessee last week, while the Jaguars have a lot of questions to answer after losing at home to Arizona 17-31. NFL point spreads have been set, showing the Texans -3.5 over the Jaguars with a big Total Set of 47 points. The Texans’ offense was ugly in a season-opening 24-7 home loss to the Jets, but this unit bounced back nicely in their Week 2 victory over the Titans, scoring 34 points. Houston was held to just 183 total yards against the Jets and no offensive points, with their only score coming on a defensive fumble return for a touchdown. But they came back to put up 421 total yards against Tennessee last week, led by QB Matt Schaub who threw a career-high four touchdown passes. Wide receiver Andre Johnson was on the receiving end of two of those scores, and their star WR finished with 10 catches for 149 yards. The ground game is a concern, as Houston has rushed for just 101 yards in two games. Steve Slaton put up 1,282 yards last season in his rookie campaign, but he’s off to a slow start this year. Slaton has just 51 yards on 26 carries and he’s already fumbled three times. This team cannot overcome those turnovers week in and week out, because right now they own the league’s worst defense, giving up 455.5 yards/game.

The Jaguars allowed Kurt Warner to complete a league-record 24-of-26 passes last week. They fell behind 31-3, so really this game was even more of a blowout than the 31-17 final indicated. Jacksonville used to be known for their stingy, aggressive defense. But the stop unit recorded no sacks last Sunday, and they’ll have to get more pressure on the Texans’ passing game this week or Schaub will tear them apart again. Jacksonville’s two offensive stars have yet to produce. Maurice Jones-Drew has been held in check, and David Garrard has three fumbles already compared to just two touchdown passes. The Jaguars have now lost 10 of their last 12 games. The Texans are 8-6 lifetime against Jacksonville, including 5-2 when playing in Houston. Their last home meeting with the Jags resulted in a 30-17 victory behind 130 rushing yards and two touchdowns from Slaton.
