Jacksonville Jaguars vs Indianapolis Colts NFL Lines

Written September 11, 2009 by InfoPlays

Jacksonville Jaguars vs Indianapolis Colts NFL LinesThe Jacksonville Jaguars hit the road in Week 1 to take on the Indianapolis Colts. This is a rare division game in the first week of the NFL regular season, and it’s been one of the more competitive rivalries in the league. Last year, Jacksonville won the first meeting 23-21 on a last-second field goal by Josh Scobee in Indy during Week 3. The second meeting saw Indianapolis score 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter on December 18th to earn a 24-17 victory. The road team has been dominant in this series, going 3-1 SU & 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings. Oddsmakers have installed Indy -7 over Jacksonville with a Total Set of 44.5 points according to the NFL lines at Sportsbook.com.

Tony Dungy was the most successful coach in Colts’ history, leading his team to the playoffs in all seven seasons on the job, including a Super Bowl victory. Jim Caldwell takes over the reigns this season, and though it’s a new face, not much will change. Peyton Manning won the league’s MVP award after guiding Indianapolis to 9 straight victories to end the season. The Colts finished 12-4 which signified the sixth straight year they’ve finished with at least 12 wins. Caldwell served under Dungy for eight seasons, and he brings a new attitude to this team unlike the laid-back approach of Dungy. It might be just the spark Indy needs to get over the hump and to avoid another postseason disappointment. Gone is Marvin Harrison, but Manning still has two reliable targets in WR Reggie Wayne and TE Dallas Clark, not to mention the up-and-coming Anthony Gonzalez. The Colts’ defense tends to go as Bob Sanders goes, but Sanders will be missing this Week 1 contest due to injury, so expect a heavy dose of Maurice Jones-Drew thrown their way.

The Jacksonville Jaguars went from an 11-5 record in 2007 to one of the worst teams in the league in 2008. Expectations were high, but injuries really hurt the Jags throughout the season as they suffered a 5-11 campaign in ‘08. Once a veteran team, the Jaguars are expecting big contributions from several new faces in 2009, including four rookie starters in the opener. Head coach Jack Del Rio wants to get back to playing smash-mouth football with a power-running game and a nasty defense. Offensively, running back Maurice Jones-Drew no longer has to play in the shadows of Fred Taylor. This is he and QB David Garrard’s team now. Jones-Drew finished with 824 rushing yards and 565 receiving yards last season, accounting for 14 touchdowns. Jones-Drew put up 328 yards of total offense and a touchdown in two meetings with the Colts last year. He’ll be playing with a bruised right shin in which he suffered in the final preseason game. Garrard threw for 3,620 yards last season, but only had 15 touchdowns to 13 interceptions while being sacked 42 times. Ultimately, it will be the play of the Jags’ inexperienced defense that tells whether they can compete Sunday or not.
