Jacksonville Jaguars at New York Giants

This Sunday the Jacksonville Jaguars will look for their fourth straight win when they go on the road to take on the struggling New York Giants. The Jaguars overcame six turnovers to beat the Browns 24-20 last week, while the Giants lost 27-17 at Philadelphia for their second consecutive loss. Even though these two teams appear to be headed in different directions, the oddsmakers still think New York has the advantage in this one, as the current odds have the Giants favored by 7-points over the Jaguars at home.
Jacksonville (6-4): Few could have predicted that the Jaguars would be in first place in the AFC South after 10 games, but after their recent surge that is exactly where they are. Last week the Jaguars trailed 17-10 going into the fourth quarter, and were down 20-17 with just under three minutes to play, but found a way to win, as Maurice Jones-Drew scored from one yard out with just over a minute to play.
Jones-Drew finished with 220 yards of total offense against the Browns, leading the team in both rushing (133) and receiving (87). Jones-Drew is a big reason the Jaguars are riding a three game winning streak, as he has rushed for 100 yards or more in each of the last three games. The Giants come in allowing just 89.5 yards a game on the ground, but have struggled against power backs like Jones-Drew.
Quarterback David Garrard completed 20 of 34 for 254 yards and two touchdowns, but also had three interceptions and a fumble. The Jaguars won despite being -5 in the turnover margin, something that simply won’t happen often, and if they don’t get it figured out this week, they will have no chance at stopping the Giants.
New York (6-4): Even though the Giants have lost two straight, I still think this is one of the best teams in the NFC, and have a great shot at getting back on track at home this week. The Giants will be without star wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, but quarterback Eli Manning does such a great job of distributing the ball to who is open, I don’t think it will have as big of an effect as some might think.
Manning finished 20 of 33 for just 147 yards and two touchdowns against the Eagles, and also had trouble with throwing the ball to the other team, as he had three interceptions on the game. The Jaguars secondary hasn’t been all that good this season, as they come in giving up nearly 265 yards a game, and I think Manning is primed to bounce back with a big game.
Defensively the key for the Giants will be getting pressure on Garrard and keep Jones-Drew in check. If New York can build an early lead and get Jacksonville out of the running game, I think they can run away with this one.
Looking at the Odds: I think your money has to be on the Giants to cover the spread this week, as I think they matchup very well with what the Jaguars do on both sides of the ball. I think the Giants defense is going to give Jacksonville a lot of trouble, while Manning and company should be able to move the ball through the air and put some points on the board. My final score prediction is New York 34, Jacksonville 24.
