Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Houston Texans NFL Betting Odds & Spread

Written November 28, 2008 by Jason Lowry

Monday Night Football this week has two AFC South teams doing battle in the Houston Texans and the Jacksonville Jaguars, as both teams near the end of a disappointing season. The Jaguars had hopes of a possible Super Bowl birth this season, but the line went down early, and the running game never showed up, and after last weeks 12-30 loss to the Vikings at home, the Jaguars are just 4-7 on the season. The Texans season hasn’t gone to well either, as they were hoping to finish at least over .500 this season, but have spent most of it without their starting quarterback Matt Schaub, but were able to pull off the win last week on the road over the Browns, as they finished the day with a 16-6 win. For those of you looking to do some NFL betting on the game this weekend, the oddsmakers have the Texans 3 point favorites at home over the Jaguars at Bookmaker.com

One of the Jaguars 4 wins this season came against these same Texans where the Jaguars came out on top 30-27 at home. Last week against the Vikings the Jags didn’t have much offense going for them, as the run game was little to nothing running for just 35 combined yards. Now David Garrard did throw for 317 yards and the teams only touchdown to Reggie Williams, but Garrard also had 2 interceptions, as the Vikings were all over the Jags offensive line all day long. One thing worth noting is Maurice Jones-Drew had just 4 yards rushing on 3 carries, but easily made up for it catching 9 balls for 113 yards. Now the running game hasn’t really been there at all this season, so its hard to think they are going to get going this week against the Texans.

Now the Jags defense got a nice little bonus when Adrian Peterson was benched for the start of the game, but the star back still found his way to run for 80 yards and a score in this one, as the Vikings offense fed off the defensive play. Last time against the Texans Matt Schaub tore apart the Jags secondary for 30 yards and 3 scores, but was solid against the run holding the Texans to just 79 yards on the ground. Now neither team has much to play for in this one, other than a paycheck, so its hard telling which way this one will go. Bet Jaguars +3 at Bookmaker.com

Last week the Browns snapped a 3 game losing streak, and if the season trend continues for this team they will win this one and likely the game next week. Now the Texans are playing okay football with Sage Rosenfels as the starting quarterback, but there is a chance Schaub comes back earlier than expected and plays this week, but that looks like a long shot. Last week Rosenfels had 275 yards with 209 of those yards going to Andre Johnson and Kevin Walter. Johnson led the way with 116 yards, while Walter scored the touchdown on a 17 yard pass to put the Texans on the scoreboard first. Rookie running back Steve Slaton continues to put up impressive numbers this season, and shows little sign of slowing down after running for 73 yards and 21 carries a week after running for 156 yards against the Colts.

Now the Texans defense did a heck of a job of slowing down the Browns last week, as they allowed just 6 points, as the Browns were only able to muster two 2nd quarter field goals. The Texans shut down the Browns passing attack, as Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn combined to go just 13 of 32 for 145 yards with 3 interceptions, as neither quarterback looked good. Last time against the Jags they allowed Garrard to throw for 236 yards and a score and run for 41 with another score. This is not the same Jags offense as they seen back in week 3 so you have to think the Texans have the edge at home in this one. Bet Texans -3 at Bookmaker.com
